It’s not even available here on Amazon, so I didn’t plan on reading it. Not familiar with it at all, sorry.
I haven’t read Penny Plain yet, but I see the ebook available for free on Amazon. (Apparently I “bought” it in 2014—that’s how bad my TBR is. 😄)

It is also available through Project Gutenberg.

Barb beat me to it! I also got the free copy on Amazon & it was fine - no formatting or typo issues.
Other Douglas titles (including the sequel, Pink Sugar) are on Faded Page which is like the Canadian Gutenberg. https://www.fadedpage.com/
You just have to check that your copyright laws in the States are the same as Canada's.

Thanks, Barb and Carol!

Woot, woot, enjoy! I downloaded the free copy as well, look forward to it!
I'm about halfway through. I like it! Just enough sly humor to counter all of the earnest pronouncements.I'm reminded of some of the books by Grace Livingston Hill that I read eons ago.

Ah, so you are picking up on the semi-subversive stuff I missed.
& a lot of GLHs books are free on kindle. I've had a quick look at the most popular ones on GR - The Enchanted Barn looked like it might be a bit much for me, so I have downloaded the second most popular Maria Schuyler

Just finished. I enjoyed it while I was reading it and I liked all of the characters.I will say more later as I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't finished yet.
I’ll be honest, I read the first chapter, but it really didn’t grab me. There are other books in the pool I’d rather read first.
Susan-- Yes, it does start out slow. Keep it around for when you want a change of pace. It is very much a product of its time and place. But you get two lovely low-key romances, and I found that most of the characters were pleasant to spend time with.

My mom introduced me to GLH when I was a kid. Our favorites were The Enchanted Barn, Marcia Schuyler, and Cloudy Jewel.
