Some descriptions of this book on Goodreads describe this book as a 'semi-satire'. I'm not even totally sure what that means.

Anyone else read this book as anything but a Cinderella story?

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 2179 comments It’s not even available here on Amazon, so I didn’t plan on reading it. Not familiar with it at all, sorry.

Peggy (dandelion_cottage) | 306 comments I haven’t read Penny Plain yet, but I see the ebook available for free on Amazon. (Apparently I “bought” it in 2014—that’s how bad my TBR is. 😄)

Susan--it is on Amazon--2 different copies. I 'bought' the free one. Search for it by title. Amazon seems to have a number of books by O. Douglas.
It is also available through Project Gutenberg.

Barb beat me to it! I also got the free copy on Amazon & it was fine - no formatting or typo issues.

Other Douglas titles (including the sequel, Pink Sugar) are on Faded Page which is like the Canadian Gutenberg. https://www.fadedpage.com/

You just have to check that your copyright laws in the States are the same as Canada's.

I hear you, Peggy!

Thanks, Barb and Carol!

Jackie | 697 comments thanks, everybody, for letting us know there is a free copy - I have it on my Kindle and will be reading it at some point.

in fact, I have a NEW kindle shipping this week so I'll be able to read it on my new paperwhite.

Woot, woot, enjoy! I downloaded the free copy as well, look forward to it!

Barb in Maryland | 684 comments I'm about halfway through. I like it! Just enough sly humor to counter all of the earnest pronouncements.
I'm reminded of some of the books by Grace Livingston Hill that I read eons ago.

Ah, so you are picking up on the semi-subversive stuff I missed.

& a lot of GLHs books are free on kindle. I've had a quick look at the most popular ones on GR - The Enchanted Barn looked like it might be a bit much for me, so I have downloaded the second most popular Maria Schuyler

Barb in Maryland | 684 comments Just finished. I enjoyed it while I was reading it and I liked all of the characters.
I will say more later as I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't finished yet.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 2179 comments I’ll be honest, I read the first chapter, but it really didn’t grab me. There are other books in the pool I’d rather read first.

message 14: by Barb in Maryland (new)

Barb in Maryland | 684 comments Susan-- Yes, it does start out slow. Keep it around for when you want a change of pace. It is very much a product of its time and place. But you get two lovely low-key romances, and I found that most of the characters were pleasant to spend time with.

My mom introduced me to GLH when I was a kid. Our favorites were The Enchanted Barn, Marcia Schuyler, and Cloudy Jewel.
