This book tells the true story of the 2010 mining disaster that occurred in Copiapó Chile, when 33 miners were trapped hundreds of meters underground. The miners agreed to put forth one official narrative and Héctor Tobar was chosen to tell their story. It is told chronologically from the beginning of the fateful day of the collapse through post-rescue. It is an amazing story of their attempt to survive, ration food, and keep their sanity while living in a dark pit. It also provides insight into group dynamics, and the manner in which different miners used their individual skills. For example, one of the men led them in prayer and their faith played a big part in keeping them sane.
It also highlights the ways the people above ground came together to form rescue plans to save these men. The technological solutions were intricate and required great cooperation among separate entities across the world. I remembered this event from the news headlines and had to read the details of their miraculous survival. The book is well constructed and easy to read. The author does a great job of providing insight into the characters of these men and relating what they thought and felt during their ordeal. It also portrays how the dealt with the aftermath, including becoming “celebrities” and dealing with their psychological traumas. Recommended to those interested in true disaster stories.
