Theresa | 15750 comments Two bodies are found in the bayou in Lark in Shelby County in East Texas, a male black attorney from Chicago then a couple days later a young local white woman. Black Texas Ranger Darren Matthews, currently on suspension as a result of an incident he had involved himself in while of duty, is asked to check out the situation on behalf of a friend in the Justice Department given he is nearby, familiar with the area, and especially familiar with the racial tensions and telationships that go deep and back to the first settlements of the area. The Justice Department has concerns that a drug dealing and violent white supremacist group they are watching is involved. Over just a few days, as Darren uncovers enough to be pulled off suspension and be officially investigating, the author gives us a stunning thriller and crime story that also immerses us in the complexities of race in the rural South. At the same time, Darren's personal history and story, allegiances and conflicts, are also stripped bare and at the end leaves you surprised by something we should have known all along, yet leaves much open, to be explored in future series books.

This deservedly won Best Novel Edgar. Characters are complex, the setting coming through strongly, and the atmosphere rich. This is where the blues were born, and the blues are here - the title refers to Johnny Lee Hooker's Bluebird Bluebird. Here is a recording and a link to the lyrics:

If you like Razorblade Tears by S.A. Cosby, you will like this.

Patrick Sharpe | 2 comments I loved "Bluebird Bluebird"! Attica Locke crafts a gripping story with such depth. Darren Matthews is a compelling protagonist, dealing with intense racial and personal issues. The setting is almost a character itself, steeped in the blues and the gritty reality of East Texas. The way Locke intertwines the mystery with social commentary is impressive. It kept me hooked from start to finish.

Peacejanz | 1015 comments Thanks for the review. I like Attica Locke also but have not seen anything lately from her. And I agree that this is in the same league with Razorblade Tears. peace, janz

Theresa | 15750 comments It is also in league with All the Sinners Bleed, S.A. Cosby's latest.
