This is the second book in a second series for the author. Based on the English coast during WW2, a young preacher's daughter is determined to become a female constable. Misogyny abounds. Interesting case, though, as a man is murdered who has more identities than he should. It's not gritty, but it is definitely more than cute.

* The Lioness by Chris Bohjalian - owned, 5 star
I haven't read a Bohjalian book in a while, for no reason that I can fathom because I loved all the ones I had read. This was a local book club read. This was an interesting read - a Hollywood star, her new husband and entourage embark on a safari, only to have it go completely awry. Very different from what I have read of his in the past.

* The White Lady by Jacqueline Winspear, owned, 5 star
A standalone novel from the author of the Maisie Dobbs series.Tthe protagonist is a retired, 40-ish, female agent of WW1 and 2. She comes to the defense of young neighbors and becomes embroiled (in the background) in thefts, murders, and harassing the police (and that is part of the backstory.) Well done.

* What Strange Paradise by Omar El Akkad, own, 5 star
Heartbreaking and unfortunately, timely, story about a boat of people who have spent all their money in the world for a place on a dilapidated boat taking them somewhere "safe". The story centers on one small family, whose six year old finds himself on the boat, but the journey itself tells the story of various people and what took them on this journey.

* Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen, own,4 stars
It has been over seven years since Sarah Addison Allen wrote one of her southern-based magical realism stories.
I loved this one as much as the others, although using a somewhat different premise.

* Almost Everything: Notes on Hope by Anne Lamott, own,5 star
I bought this book when it was first published in 2018 for both myself and my niece. I then put it on a shelf because I wasn't feeling much hope in those days. Read this for another challenge. Lovely affirmations of life (and what makes us a bit "tense"). I am truly sorry I hadn't read it sooner.

* Getting Unstuck: Breaking Your Habitual Patterns & Encountering Naked Reality by Pema Chödrön, audio, 5+stars
My brother recommended this author (a Buddhist nun) to me a few years ago. Like Lamott's book, I put this away as well. Read this for another challenge and discovered that the two of them combined provided some inexpensive therapy! Both are keepers to be read/listened to more than once! (And I HATE having to tell my brother he's right. Again.)

* An Act of Foul Play by T.E. Kinsey, audio, 3.5
This has been a fun series to which I listen. But this one? Fun premise (actor murdered in the middle of a play), but the investigation took waaaaay too long.

* The Dead Pull Hitter by Alison Gordon, e-book, 3 stars.
Read this for another challenge. First in a series that I won't be following. Female sports journalist in the 80's following a fictional MLB team out of Toronto. It's playoff season and two of their players are now dead. If you like baseball you will like this. Way too much jargon for me.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17048 comments Nice month Gail, looks like several resonated for you. I also enjoyed Jacqueline Winspear’s White Lady. I may have to seek out your two inspirational books.
