My editor calls them “genre busters.” I’m not sure what to call them. I’d like to know what you think.
My new book and the one before it are Early American history, but told in a new way. In them, a grandfather tells his two grandchildren the history of our Founding in a series of story times. In the first, he tells them about the formation of our nation from Jamestown through the Bill of Rights. In the second, he tells them about the many accomplishments by women that helped make the Founding possible.
Both books are written entirely in dialogue – the grandfather tells the history stories and the grandchildren ask questions along the way. There is no expository prose in either one, as other history books consist of, but the stories are history – as accurate and true as I can make them.
I am asked what the genre is, as are we all, when I list my books, offer them for sale, offer them for review, and enter them in competitions.
Frequently, those who receive them differ. Once, I submitted the first one in a competition and had it returned to me with a note to resubmit in another category.
I need your help. What is the genre? I’d appreciate your opinions. I'd also be grateful for reviews.
