For July's Book of the Month, we're looking at comics made into movies or TV shows!

Do you have any favorites to recommend? Any non-Marvel/DC reads made into movies or TV you want to share?

Tell us all about your pick and share recommendations with others in the thread below!

Evilblacksheep | 85 comments I think I'm gonna read Nimona, the show has just been released on netflix a few days ago.

One high recommendation from me is 20th Century Boys 1. The live adaptation was meh but the manga is excellent. I recommend also Sweet Tooth, Locke & Key and The Umbrella Academy for those who haven't read them yet.

One other obvious non Marvel/DC choice is The Walking Dead but I personally got bored along the way.

Do manga who got made into anime count? If so I'll also highly recommend Naoki Urasawa's Monster, Volume 1 (and there is a lot of other good stuff in that category).

I had no idea Nimona was being made into a movie. Thanks for the suggestions!

ruta (ilyarozanov) | 9 comments I haven't really read any mangas in the last couple of years, but I just saw that AJIN had been completed 2 years ago now and has a live-action adaptation. I saw the trailer and it looks very promising, I was very disappointed with the anime adaptation because of all the slowness. It might be time to finally finish the manga for me.

Jessica (juicica) | 45 comments Some options that come to mind for this theme are The Boys, Volume 1: The Name of the Game, Death Note, Vol. 1: Boredom, and Sweet Tooth, Vol. 1: Out of the Deep Woods.

Not 100% sure what I'll pick for this month, if I'll go with one of these or check out something else. Excited to see everyone's suggestions!

Nancy | 176 comments The Netflix adaptation of Nimona was pretty darn cute! Locke & Key's three seasons featured more fantasy than horror, but I enjoyed it. Jupiter's Legacy was canceled after a mediocre first season- I think they should have given it more time to hit its stride.

Evilblacksheep | 85 comments Forgot to mention, in case someone is interested in dipping their toes in something "a bit" bigger, there is also The Sandman and Hellboy universes that fit the prompt.

Max (maxwellatewell) | 57 comments I’m going with Kingsman by Mark Millar. (I’m mobile exclusively for the weekend so I can’t link) it’s one of my favorite movies. The first chapter was good

I’ve tried twice to get through Joe Hill’s Locke & Key series, and both times I got bogged down about two volumes in. Maybe third time is the charm.

Canavan | 51 comments I’ve looked at a few things over the past couple of days. Maybe the best of the lot is The Death of Stalin . Originally released in two volumes (2010 and 2012) by Fabien Nury and Thierry Robin, it was translated from the original French into English in 2017. It was also the basis of critically well-received English language film of the same name, directed by Armando Iannucci and released in 2017. Both graphic novel and movie are pseudo-historical dark comedies that trace the power struggle in the Kremlin in the wake of Joseph Stalin’s death.

Oneirosophos | 36 comments Sweet Tooth, Y The Last Man & Paper Girls. Amazing comics, average to awful adaptations.

You need to finish the Locke & Key graphic novel series- it's absolutely fantastic!

Ed Erwin | 340 comments I watched Nimona last night. I loved it. I've not read the book yet, but maybe I will.

Paper Girls was a pretty good adaptation. I wish it could have continued.

The film version of that is very funny, darkly funny of course. I didn't see any humor in the book. I think others say it was funny, but it wasn't to me. Film and book seemed totally tonally different.

We stopped watching the TV show 3 episodes in. Too dark and missing all of the fun of the comics. The comics I've read through 3 different times now.

Malcolm Fraser | 2 comments This is a fine excuse for me to watch Dredd (2012) again

message 17: by Paul (new)

Paul Goracke | 81 comments Now that it’s an AppleTV+ show, I think this is my excuse to give Drops of God, Vol. 1 a try.

message 18: by Gwen (new)

Gwen (laviegwenrose) | 2 comments In the Marvel universe, I always recommend Captain America Vol. 5, which ran from 2005 to 2009, written by Ed Brubaker and was adapted as the second Cap film Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014). I still think it's the best Cap run, and nothing has come close.

Meanwhile, in the DC universe, maybe a common thing to recommend, but you can't go wrong with Batman: Under the Red Hood by Judd Winnick which was adapted in 2010 starring Jensen Ackles as Red Hood and Bruce Greenwood as Batman.

I haven’t read that particular run, but for my money The Winter Soldier was by far the best of the Cap films, and perhaps the best MCU movie period.

Ed Brubaker's run is easily the best run of Cap ever.

I didn't realize it was made into a Netflix show, but I read The Hellbound, Vol. 1 this morning and will count that for my Book of the Month!

Some really good suggestions in here!

Gwen (laviegwenrose) | 2 comments I can’t believe I forgot but Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O’Malley is great especially if you liked the 2010 film. If I’m not mistaken, Vol. 1 is almost exactly the same as in the film and then they made changes as the story goes as they try to compress six volumes in one film. It’s also getting a new Netflix animated series with the original cast voicing their characters.

I just picked up V1 of Scott Pilgrim to see what all the hype is about!

Omg! Didn't know about the Netflix series. So excited for it now!

Keep an eye on the feed this week: We're dropping a special episode about this comic / movie!

message 26: by Ed (new)

Ed Erwin | 340 comments I've been watching the "Doom Patrol" show, season 1. I think I'm liking it more than the books. The story is stretched-out, often a full episode will be dedicated to one of the characters. This is making me believe in and care about the characters more than in the book.

We tried to watch it and found the episodes long and boring. I'm a much bigger fans of the comics going back to the Grant Morrison days and beyond.

message 28: by Ed (new)

Ed Erwin | 340 comments Different Stroke for different folks! In episode 13 (of 15), Mr Nobody states that all those character-driven episodes probably bored people and that now they could finally get the superhero action they came for.

Not me, though! I liked learning more about the characters. I tend to avoid shows with lots of action.

I'll also say that this is one of the queerest shows I've seen on TV. Lots of time is spent with gay, trans, and otherwise "different" people.
