I'm still working on a double Balogh post for H&H, so I'm still rereading some of her books. Today's book is The Secret Pearl--not one of my favorites. I haven't reread it in many years.

Reading Anna Cambells last three book. I stopped reading her a while ago finding them overwrought and impossible to believe in their world. These are still over the top but also have enough humor and plausible human emotions that I am enjoying them.

Susan (susaninaz) | 1075 comments I just finished Emma Cane's A Town Called Valentine. A wonderful contemporary romance, no bondage sex or queer-best-friends or other distractions, with a heartbreaking central conflict. And it was FREE!

Irisheyes | 896 comments Just finished up the Sweet Kisses series by Grace Burrowes. I really enjoyed it and would love a novella with an update on everyone! LOL

I just started Sarah Mayberry's newest novella, BOUND TO THE BACHELOR. I'm liking this and know I'm going to wish it was a full novel.

Rachel Hill | 487 comments I'm reading Loraine Heath's Lost Lords of Pembrooke series. I like her books, but she's uses the word laconically A LOT. In all the books I've read of hers. Anyone else notice this? I'm on the 2nd one currently, and so far so good

Stacey (staceyissassy) I"m reading Soaring (Magdalene, #2) by Kristen Ashley at the moment. It's over 12000 kindle long and it's very, very descriptive. I love Kristen Ashley, will always love KA, but this is LONG...

I finished The Devil in Denim by Melanie Scott last night. Sexy, funny, great hero.

Still trying to decide what to go with next.

message 9: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cawils_99) I'm finishing The Coldest Girl in Coldtown because I finally got the book after the audiobook stopped working. I also started His Captive Bride by Shelly Thacker.

Rachel, I think many authors have verbal tics such as Heath's use of "laconically." I know I am conscious of words that I tend to use often in my own writing. And all the Balogh rereads have reminded me once again that she almost always refers to characters' teeth. I think readers tend to notice such things more when reading books by the author one after the other.

Jill Shalvis has several such tics. She wrote some of my favorite contemps but I find it hard to read her later books for this reason--I probably should just write and tell her.

message 13: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Hill | 487 comments Funny thing is that it is an odd word. I really like her books & now it makes me giggle. I laughed a bit, yes Mary Balogh does refer to teeth a bunch! Maybe bc they're set in the UK? They're not know for having awesome teeth. I'm pretty sure she's from the Uk too, maybe she's trying to change the perception

Totally agree. I think Jill Shalvis needs a refresh as well. I'm glad she finished Lucky Harbour, it's time to move onto something new :-)
