What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I cannot remember plot details, but believe it focused on a group of people in a mansion. I can remember the cover, which was gray and white checkered pattern.

I read it in 6th grade around 1997 or 1998.

The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin takes place in a mansion for part of the story if my memory is correct. The anniversary edition has a checker board cover.
