Mr. Washington does in such a beautiful way describes the relationship between slave and slave owner in the south during slavery and post emancipation. He quickly paints a picture in simple words without leaving room for twisting his facts. Chapter one is the start of something special. An autobiography that is clear and uncluttered by modern ideas. Is Mr. Washington confused? Is he lying? Their is no malice in his words or thoughts. This is a beautiful book that needs to be examined. Chapter one is so very important to set the mood. It should not be overlooked or taken lightly.
