Grave witch Alex Craft can speak to the dead, but that doesn’t mean she likes what they have to say.

As a private investigator and consultant for the police, Alex Craft has seen a lot of dark magic. But even though she’s on good terms with Death himself—who happens to look fantastic in a pair of jeans—nothing has prepared her for her latest case. Alex is investigating a high profile murder when she’s attacked by the ‘shade’ she’s raising, which should be impossible. To top off her day, someone makes a serious attempt on her life, but Death saves her. Guess he likes having her around...

To solve this case Alex will have to team up with tough homicide detective Falin Andrews. Falin seems to be hiding something—though it’s certainly not his dislike of Alex—but Alex knows she needs his help to navigate the tangled webs of mortal and paranormal politics, and to track down a killer wielding a magic so malevolent, it may cost Alex her life...and her soul.

I'm enjoying this so far, I like Alex's character a lot. Her magic is interesting, it was neat that she got to use it to get justice for a murdered little girl. I wonder who's trying to kill her after she saw Coleman's body (which isn't actually Coleman apparently)? And what's the deal with Detective Andrews? He really doesn't like Alex and I'm curious as to why.

The case in this one is getting really interesting. What's the deal with these soul-consuming spells Alex keeps coming across? First the one that's attached itself to her and now the one on this girl's body. And now something is after John? Alex really needs to find Coleman and put a stop to all this.

That was a close one for Alex, she almost found herself stuck in Faerie under a fae's control. And she found Tommy, the missing intern. I wonder how he ended up stuck in there? And what's the deal with this cryptic message Alex received from those fae?

Ok wow, that confrontation with Coleman was crazy. Alex used so much power there and now even after it's over, she can still see in different planes without actively using her magic. I wonder what repercussions that will have? And her dad is a fae?! Didn't see that coming.

I really enjoyed this one and definitely plan to continue with the series.

25% (view spoiler)[I'm really enjoying this so far! I think her profession is super interesting. And then her not getting hit by that bullet but the guy getting hit was not expected. Hopefully she can figure out who was behind trying to kill her. (hide spoiler)]

43% (view spoiler)[I was NOT expecting for Casey to be a witch too. This really makes things more interesting. But I understand why she hid it. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 1-3: (view spoiler)[This makes for an interesting premise and I am intrigued by Alex’s capabilities. The book dove right into action with someone trying to kill Alex probably for simply realising that Coleman’s body was enchanted. This makes me wonder if there is a mole somewhere in the police department. In any case, i am eager to see if there’s a romantic angle in there somewhere between Alex and her nemesis looking Andrews (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 4-9: (view spoiler)[The fact that Cole is changing bodies as if they are clothes is very intriguing and I am curious to learn whose body he has occupied next. Seems like Alex has landed herself in a pickle since it was revealed that she was involved in the Coleman case. Falin is really bothered by her but I can also see a budding romance between the two. Excited to see what developments would the charity dinner bring forth (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 10-14: (view spoiler)[The soul consumption spell on Alex sounds so dangerous and I hope she finds a way to get rid of it before her soul is taken away completely. I am eager to see what has Coleman planned that is taking so much preparation, the women being killed in a weird way is kinda scary ngl. Death kissing Alex scene made me a bit uncomfortable, I hope that does not turn into a romance (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 15-21: (view spoiler)[I was positively afraid for a second that Alex would not be able to free herself from whatever trance the fae had put her in. It was definitely a close call and Falin saved the day by bringing Alex back. The case is getting even more mysterious and I am very excited to see how exactly Alex manages to stop the big ritual in time and save people from the intended harm (hide spoiler)]

Finished: (view spoiler)[That was a lot of action towards the end. I did not end up loving it honestly because it became too ritualistic for me to enjoy the story but it was good enough for a one time read. I am not sure if I'd continue with the series. I am stuck on Death confessing it loved Alex and that has weirded me out a bit. I am just glad that Alex was able to stop Coleman despite struggling through it so much (hide spoiler)]
