I read a very engaging memoir/travel log that, among other things, talks about the civilian side of the Kosovo conflict and Afghanistan. The author was a foreign financial and technical advisor in the 2000s. The memoir is Where Are You This Time?: Making a Difference in Places from Kabul to Kiev, Kosovo to Kazakhstan and Kismayo to Qatar by Mary Venner. I can't publish a review until Aug.31 (I got an ARC), but the book got 5 stars from me. It has very different, from a military, viewpoint on the peace process

Two World War II novels that I think are exceptional are Harry Brown’s A Walk in the Sun, which was adapted into a well-known film, and Peter Bowman’s Beach Red, which is written in verse form, quite original in technique.
