Anita (anitafajitapitareada) | 1520 comments Hey members,

Wanted to open the thread for October nominations. We have a seasonally appropriate theme for fiction, gothic horror. Read Around the World is going to be China, Singapore, or Taiwan.

Remember one nomination per theme and please name your country fit the RAtW.

Criteria:
1. Book must be by a female author (transwomen and women using male pseudonyms are women).
2. No books that have already been group reads within the past 3 years/36 months (check the group's bookshelf).
3. Do not nominate a book you have written or for which you are the publicist or lead marketer.
4. Consider availability. If a book is available in the US and UK (at minimum), and in paperback and ebook formats, more members can participate than if not.

To Nominate:
1. Give both the title of the book and the author's name when nominating to avoid confusion. Please use the 'add book/author' button when nominating.
2. Indicate whether you are willing or not to lead discussion if your nomination is chosen.
3. Maximum - one nomination per member, per category.

Nominations will close around August 7th.

Nominations so far:

fiction
- Linghun by Ai Jiang
- Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand, Anita
- Sisters by Daisy Johnson, Liesl
- The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, Carol
- The Woman in Black by Susan Hill, Jennifer

ratw
- Linghun by Ai Jiang, China
- The Third Son: A Novel by Julie Wu, Taiwan
- The Chilli Bean Paste Clan by Yan Ge, China, Carol

Finn (on hiatus) (ghoulpilotfinn) | 1 comments Linghun by Ai Jiang is both gothic horror and written by a Chinese-Canadian author. I can't lead the discussion for it though.

GailW (abbygg) | 327 comments I wish to recommend The Third Son: A Novel by Julie Wu. "The Third Son is a sparkling and moving story about a young {Taiwanese} boy with his head in the clouds who, against all odds, finds himself on the frontier of America’s space program." The story begins in Taiwan during the Japanese occupation in the 1940's. I would rather not lead the discussion.

Anita (anitafajitapitareada) | 1520 comments I'll add Linghun to both then since it wasn't specified and it fits.

Nominating the gothic novella Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand for fiction.

message 5: by Liesl (new)

Liesl | 677 comments I nominate Sisters by Daisy Johnson for the Gothic Horror Fiction read. I can lead.

Carol (carolfromnc) | 4174 comments For RatW, I nominate The Chilli Bean Paste Clan by Yan Ge. China.

Book Riot's description: "The Duan-Xue family owns the lucrative Mayflower Chilli Bean Paste Factory in the small town of Pingle. Ruled by a terrifying matriarch, Gran, the family is nevertheless dominated by raucous, hard-drinking men who aren’t awfully good to their wives and find themselves occupied in petty rivalries. The granddaughter of the matriarch — who is in a psychiatric hospital — narrates Ge’s novel, weaving together bits of gossip and passed-down tales. As the family plans a big birthday party for Gran’s 80th, secrets and old dramas begin to emerge back into the light. Yan Ge based her novel on her own small town in the Sichuan province, giving it an air of reluctant authenticity."

Jennifer - the blurb indicates that it's set in New York City. Is that your understanding?

Anita (anitafajitapitareada) | 1520 comments Jennifer wrote: "My read around the world nomination is Suicide Club by Rachel Heng."

This one doesn't seem to fit our Read around the World theme. As Carol stated, it seems to be set in NYC in the future (the future part isn't an issue). Read Around the World books should be at least 50%set in the country/countries of the month's theme, and/or written by a female author living there. I couldn't really find anything indicating either for the book or author but please correct me if I'm wrong and let me know the country this book/author represents.

*after some research I see Rachel Heng was born and raised in Singapore. This book was originally published there(?) and then translated into other languages (inferring English but unsure since there's no translator info) She writes and lives in the US now and I'm not sure if this qualifies this book for the Read Around the World category.

What do you think, Carol?

Cynthia | 1 comments I like the Woman in Black. And the Haunting of Hill House is pretty classic.

I think we stick to, “takes place in,” or “author native of,” as a fallback. RaTW is intended to enrich our understanding of the subject countries.

Jennifer, I’d encourage you to nominate Heng during our next OC fiction month.
