Pam | 496 comments I enjoyed this, and it's an excellent book, but I also don't feel the need to continue on with the series.

It manages, just barely, to avoid being bleak, but I don't want to read another 1400 pages of books that are just barely not bleak. Especially when you pair that with the frustration of the bad guy walking around with a huge sign over his head that says "I'm The Bad Guy," and no one's doing anything about it.

Fitz, the child, the CHILD YOU ARE ENTRUSTING AS YOUR ASSASSIN, is the only one who seems to realize how ridiculous this is, but his hands are completely tied. It's infuriating and only going to get worse in the next book.

If it weren't quite as bleak or quite as infuriating on the Prince Who Needs To Die Immediately front, I'd happily read another 1400 pages in this world. I'm definitely going to try the next trilogy from the universe that starts with Ship of Magic.

Well shoot. Is it going to confuse me?

I had the impression the Ships trilogy could stand alone if it needed to, but I was really torn about not finishing this first trilogy. It may just be that I can't binge it like I usually do...

I already feel less opposed to it than I did when I first finished the book, I just don't know if I can handle Fitz losing all the time!! The poor boy needs a win.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12689 comments Pam, IMO yes. I know you can read it as a stand alone, however if you are looking to read the other series I feel it is important to read the books in a certain order. http://www.robinhobb.com/works.htm

I do know readers that have not read them this way and were satisfied, I am a purist when it comes to Hobb though-one of my all time favorites.

The life of Fitz is complicated-I can say there is happiness sprinkled through out.

Ok, gotcha. Thanks, Joanne! I think I'll have to see how I feel about Fitz when I'm ready to start the next Hobb. It's not super high on my priority list, but I never stick to my reading plans anyway so you never know, could be tomorrow :)

Robin P | 5873 comments I read the ships series first and that was fine.
