30.5 - Nick KY's Task: True Chills

An Octoberly cool and scary task. Read two books from two different options. The total page count must be 500+ pages.

Required: state the options.

Opt. 1. Read a biography, autobiography, or memoir. The book must be nonfiction (NOT a biographical novel).

Required: If the book does not have an MPG of “Biography” or “Autobiography” or the (auto)biography genre is not obvious from the GR blurb, provide a reference.

Opt. 2. Every October, I have a tradition of re-reading Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw” in one sitting every October. The first time I did so, the experience was one of the spookiest reads ever, and the chills continue every time I pick it up. Read a book from the first 25 pages of this list:
Psychological Horror Books

Required: State what page of the list your book is found on.

Opt. 3. October 14. In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. In today’s world, we view Columbus critically, questioning his motives, the motives of his patrons, and the merits of Western expansion in general. Read a book from the first 25 pages of this “Postcolonialism” list: Postcolonialism Books

OR – because I realize that the world of postcolonial theory may not interest everybody, read a book from the first 25 pages of this “Colonial Romance” list: Colonial Romance Books

Required: State which list you used and on what page of the list your book is found on.

Opt. 4. Truly Cold. Read a book with the word “Cold” or the word “Frozen” in the title/subtitle. The word must be stand-alone and be exact.

Kathy KS | 2443 comments Checking to see if these two on my TBR list will work for Option 1. They are more regional books and/or small press without many reviews.

My Flint Hills Hoy, Jim. My Flint Hills: Observations and Reminiscences from America's Last Tallgrass Prairie. GR--“These essays are Hoy's Flint Hills, combining family lore and anecdotes of ranching life with reflections on the region's rich history and nature. Whether it's weaning calves or shoeing horses, checking in on a local legend or a night of high school basketball in nearby Cassoday, encountering a coyote or a badger or surveying what's happened to the tallgrass prairie over time, summoning cowboy traditions or parsing the place's plant life or rock formations, he has something to say--and you can bet it's well worth hearing.”

Every Three Hours Hayles, Janet Malcolm. Every Three Hours: A Mother’s Story of Raising a Child with Chronic Illnesses from Car Seat to Career. GR--“Janet tells her own story—one of a mom blessed with a son who is diagnosed with two rare chronic conditions and for whom she must make lifechanging sacrifices in order to help him reach his dreams “

It is evident that these are nonfiction memoirs. They both work.

Emily Rawlings | 171 comments Can I get Sins Of The Father: Abused by my Father Every Day for a Decade, This is My Story of Survival checked as a memoir and not an autobiography, to my understanding it is a memoir because it only fixates on one specific tragic event within her life and does not read as an autobiography

Looks like an autobiography to me. Both autobiography and memoir work for the task option.

I am reading an 800 page biography Sontag Her Life and Work by Benjamin Moser . You've got me beat.

My plans are for the second book to be a novella!

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3754 comments Morning.

So, I don't see a proscription on Graphic Novels for your task. Would you allow The Complete Maus for Option 1? MPGs include Nonfiction, History, Biography and Memoir.

Thanks.

Thanks for the question. As you note, I did not make mention for any Comics, Graphic novels, or Manga.

Deferring to the Rules of the Challenge, Section 2. # 5:

"5. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may only be used for 5, 10, and 15 point tasks unless specifically allowed in the task description for a higher point task. Task creators may allow the use of one book with a main page genre of comics, manga, etc. that fit the general SRC requirements per task."

Since I did not allow for the use of any comics, etc., the general rule applies and you cannot use it for this 30 point task. Sorry about that.

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3754 comments You're right. I'd forgotten that one, as for the last couple of seasons, people seem to be specifically disallowing them in 20/25/30 tasks along with Childrens.

Never mind. I have other options :-)
