Donna Davis (seattlebookmama) | 19 comments Jeff Shaara has written a couple of books that I like a lot. Yes, it's historical fiction, but he does his research carefully; he uses the HF genre so that he can add dialogue. I had never fully understood the Pearl Harbor debacle (or triumph, depending on which side you're on,) and his book on this gave me a greater grasp of it, past the emotional jingoism that it provoked in my parents' generation. After that is the one on the battle of Midway, also excellent. Other thoughts?

Jill H. (bucs1960) Try this one to get a clear picture of the fall of Singapore and the terrible mistakes made by the British and the tactics of the Japanese. It was a city ripe for the picking and the Japanese understood that. Interesting and detailed.

Mike | 17 comments I have read many memoirs of American resistance fighters and guerilla leaders in the Philippines during WWII. Most say very little about the overall resistance movement and are restricted to a specific location and most do not cover native guerilla fighters at all. This summer I read a great book that pulls everything together. I highly recommend it.

I've not heard of this book before. Thanks!

Mike | 17 comments Destroyer Captain: The Life of Ernest E. Evans I am currently reading this. It is a very good book about Captain Evans involvement in naval operations in the Pacific Theater up until his death of at Leyte Gulf.
