Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in the thriving City of Winona, MN in 1861? What about a teenager during that time? A time when young Minnesota men lined up to volunteer in Minnesota’s First Volunteer Infantry in the American Civil War. Soldier’s Heart is Gary Paulsen’s telling of fifteen year old Winonan, Charley Goddard.

Join the Winona Public Library bring the story of the young Winona teenager to the community through Winona Reads. Free copies of the book will be made available at the following businesses: Acoustic Café, Blooming Grounds Coffee House, Kwik Trip on Broadway & Mankato, Timbers Restaurant, Winona Family YMCA, and Winona Friendship Center. Read the novel, share the story, and pass it on to a friend. Copies of the book will also be available at Winona Public Library for book clubs.

The library will be hosting three events in conjunction to the book. On Tuesday, April 7th, the Minnesota History Center’s History Players will present Charley Goddard to Winona Middle School’s 6th Grade Class. That evening the History Players’ presentation of Charley Goddard will be open to the public at 6PM in the Library’s Bell Art Room. Learn about what it would have been like to live as a child before the Civil War; what lead up the beginning of the war; what life was like for Charley Goddard on and off the battlefield; and how the war impacted both Minnesota and the nation.

Then on Tuesday, April 14th the Library will be showing Gettysburg, a movie based on Michael Shaara’s novel The Killer Angels, at 6PM. Gettysburg tells the story of the tremendous battle in 1863 from the perspectives of many of the major key players.

The third and final event in conjunction to Soldier’s Heart is a book talk on Thursday, April 30th at 6PM. The Hiawatha Valley Civil War Round Table will compare and contrast Gary Paulsen’s book and the life of the real Charley Goddard of Winona, MN.

This program is made possible by a Community Read Grant from Southeastern Libraries Cooperating through the Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Legacy Fund and the Friends of the Winona Public Library.
