Blackshear, Georgia
Blackshear was founded in 1858 to serve as the seat of the newly formed Pierce County. The city was named after General David Blackshear, who authorized the construction of roads, bridges and 11 forts for defense. He was a patriot in the American Revolution, fighting in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge and the Battle of Buford's Bridge. He served as a general during the War of 1812. He also served in the Georgia state legislature as Senator of Laurens County. During the American Civil War, the city became a temporary prisoner-of-war camp for more than 5,000 Union prisoners. This site is marked by a historical landmark sign.
The primary crop of this south Georgia community was once tobacco, and is where the first brick tobacco warehouse in Georgia was built, known as the Brantley Brick.
📢 1. Read a book where you find the author's initials in DAVID BLACKSHEAR OR that is from the Historical genre OR where the title or author's name is in black lettering (show cover).
Blue Jay, California
The town started as the homestead of Art (1880-1956) and Norma Wixom (b. Harmon, 1883-1978). They leased a few vacation cabins and opened a store in 1914. Stoney DeMent (1892-1972) leased the land and built a market called The Blue Jay Market in 1934. The store was named for the blue colored birds that live in the area, and this later became the name of the town built up around it. The naming of the town is something of a misnomer: the local variety of jay is actually the Steller's jay, not the closely related blue jay. While this is widely known in the area, the name has stuck. Residents began to move to Blue Jay about 10 years later. In 1978 Bluejay was purchased by H.R. "Rick" Kaufman through his company Pioneer Take Out Corporation aka Pioneer Chicken.
📢 2. Read a book where you find the author's initials in PIONEER CHICKEN OR where the town survives on tourist money OR where the title or author's name is in blue lettering (show cover).

It was granted on January 23, 1764, by the Massachusetts General Court to Captain Henry Young Brown for his services in the French and Indian Wars. Farming was the chief occupation, with the Saco River providing water power for industry. Products of the mills included flour, long lumber, barrel staves, rocking chairs, clothing, carriages, sleighs and harness. Brownfield is home to the Stone Mountain Arts Center.
📢 3. Read a book where you find the author's initials in HENRY YOUNG BROWN OR where a character is a farmer, carpenter, singer or musician OR where the title or author's name is in brown lettering (show cover).
Goldsboro, North Carolina
Goldsboro is a city and the county seat of Wayne County, North Carolina, United States. It was originally named "Goldsborough's Junction" after Major Matthew T. Goldsborough, an Assistant Chief Engineer with the railroad line. Later this was shortened simply to Goldsborough, then changed to Goldsboro. In 1847, the town was incorporated and became the new Wayne County seat following a vote of the citizens of Wayne County. Local legend has it the Goldsborough supporters put moonshine in the town's well to encourage people to vote for Goldsborough. Andy Griffith was from this town. Goldsboro is home to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

Greensboro, North Carolina
It is the third-most populous city in North Carolina after Charlotte and Raleigh and the 69th-most populous city in the United States. In the early 1840s, the state government designated Greensboro as one of the stops on a new railroad line, at the request of Governor John Motley Morehead, whose house, Blandwood, was in Greensboro. Stimulated by rail traffic and improved access to markets, the city grew substantially, soon becoming known as the "Gate City" due to its role as a transportation hub for the Piedmont.
📢 5. Read a book where you find the author's initials in JOHN MOTLEY MOREHEAD OR read a series book #3 OR where the title or author's name is in green lettering (show cover).
Orange, California
Don Juan Pablo Grijalva, a retired known Spanish soldier and the area's first landowner, was granted permission in 1809 by the Spanish colonial government to establish a rancho in "the place of the Arroyo de Santiago". Originally, the community was named Richland, but in 1873 Richland got a new name. But there was already a town in northern California named Richland. Undaunted, the Richlanders proposed a new name – Orange. The town experienced its first growth spurt during the last decade of the 19th century (as did many of the surrounding communities), thanks to ever-increasing demands for California-grown citrus fruits, a period some refer to as the "Orange Era".
📢 6. Read a book where you find the author's initials in JUAN PABLO GRIJALVA OR where someone eats an orange or drinks orange juice OR where the title or author's name is in orange lettering (show cover).
Redwater, Texas
Redwater is twelve miles southwest of Texarkana in southeastern Bowie County. It grew up in the mid-1870s around a sawmill operated by two men named Daniels and Spence, who named the community Ingersoll, in honor of the agnostic Robert Ingersoll. A post office was established in 1881, and by 1884 the town had an estimated population of fifty.
In 1886 a big revival meeting was held in the town, which resulted in about 110 conversions. Shortly after the meeting residents of the town, no longer wishing to honor the agnostic, decided that the name of the town should be changed. They had just completed a new well that yielded red water, and the town was renamed for this feature. The name of the post office was not officially changed until 1894. Redwater is also home to the first recorded set of quadruplets in the United States. The town is also the birthplace of Kenny Wayne, or also known as "The Original Kenny Wayne." A Texas Blues and Rock'n'Roll musician, he toured and played many stages, including the Four States Fair & Rodeo. He was the founder and General Manager of Candy Records. He was based out of Irving, Texas, at the time of his death on August 23, 2021.
📢 7. Read a book where you find the author's initials in KENNY WAYNE OR from a series of 4 books (share series name) OR where the title or author's name is in red lettering (show cover).
Rose Hill, Fairfax County, Virginia
The community of Rose Hill derives its name from an 18th-century plantation once located nearby; this was established by Daniel French, the first builder of Pohick Church, on land that had been part of the Gunston Hall estate. The community of Rose Hill was established in 1954. Within four years a Safeway had been constructed, as had two swimming pools serving residents. An elementary school was opened in 1957, a year after the foundation of the Rose Hill Civic Association. In 1970 the Fairfax County Park Authority purchased 148 acres in the area for construction of a golf course; the Greendale Golf Course was dedicated on August 19, 1976.
📢 8. Read a book where you find the author's initials in DANIEL FRENCH OR where someone goes to a grocery store, an elementary school, swimming pool or golf course OR where the title or author's name is in rose or pink lettering (show cover).
Silver Spring, Maryland
In 1840, Francis Preston Blair, who later helped organize the modern American Republican Party, along with his daughter, Elizabeth, discovered a spring flowing with chips of mica believed to be the now-dry spring visible at Acorn Park. Blair was looking for a site for his summer home to escape the heat of Washington, D.C., summers. Two years later, Blair completed a 20-room mansion he dubbed "Silver Spring" on a 250-acre (1 km2) country homestead. In 1854, Blair moved to the mansion permanently. The house stood until 1954.
📢 9. Read a book where you find the author's initials in FRANCIS BLAIR OR where someone has or uses a vacation home OR where the title or author's name is in silver or gray lettering (show cover).
Whitefish, Montana
Long before the first Europeans came to Whitefish, native American tribes inhabited the area, most notably the Kootenai, the Pend d’Oreille, and the Bitterroot Salish. Though trappers, traders, and waves of westward immigrants passed through the area during the second half of the century, it wasn’t until 1883 that the first permanent settler, John Morton built a cabin on the shore of Whitefish Lake, just west of the mouth of the Whitefish River. Skiing has been part of the Whitefish area for more than 50 years. In 1937, the Whitefish Lake Ski Club obtained a special permit from the U.S. Forest Service enabling them to build cabins and trails in the Hell Roaring Creek region.

Colored Cities #3
Duration: September 1 - November 30, 2023
Object: Read one book for each colored city.
The Cities

Products of the mills included flour, long lumber, barrel staves, rocking chairs, clothing, carriages, sleighs and harness. Brownfield is home to the Stone Mountain Arts Center.
