Please comment here on 'The Yearling' by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, 1939 Pulitzer Prize winner.

Irene | 654 comments I wish I had read it as a child. I think I would have appreciated it much more. At my current jaded stage of life, Jody was too sweet, Penny too wise and the mother too obedient. I an sure that in its day, the tough decision that the family faced about Flag was more daring than usually portrayed in children's lit. I enjoyed the descriptions of nature.

I liked this coming of age novel set in the backwoods of Florida in the 1930s. There are good descriptions of nature and the way of life of poor farming families. I agree that the characters tend to be a little one dimensional. Penny is overly wise, sensitive and tolerant. His wife is very compliant and stolid. Jody is a little too nice.

There are a number of dramatic incidents in the novel, providing good plot momentum.

An easy to read historical fiction novel about a small family living off the land with the odd bartering done in the nearby town.
