Science Fiction Aficionados discussion

In order to keep things fresh around here, I was thinking we could do the occasional member choice read...of course, there would be the usual rules, no author picks, must be available on multiple formats, a sci-fi or spec fiction we haven't read, etc.

Please reply to this thread if you would like to be on the choosing list, or if you have any ideas or suggestions about the whole scheme!

or maybe the member would choose a few books and then we'd vote? What do you all think?

I LOVE this idea! I'm with Scott, I feel like my choices never get picked! So I'm imagining a lottery perhaps? And then the lottery winner would pick some 5 to 10 books that everyone else would then vote on? Is that what you're envisioning? That way there would be some group ownership of the final choice.

Sounds like you're setting yourself up for trouble Maggie. How do you choose the member? Does it become a popularity contest or is it random? I also think It'd be best to have said members suggestion/s put to a vote.

there's a website, I forget which, which can provide an automatic random selection from a list of all those who are interested.

also, I really like Alexa's suggestion of the winner putting 5 or so books up for a group vote.

The way my meetup group does it is we have someone pick 3 books. The people who pick are volunteers. We take turns. It works pretty well.

Yep. I think Alexa's idea is great, if we can pick someone at random. Then they nominate 5 books and we all vote on them, great idea and it should give us some interesting reads !!

Sounds like a way to reduce another TBR book on my self.... Or someone else's shelf.

as requested in post #2, it sounds as if most of us agree that the volunteer should nominate a variety of books.
I was thinking of doing a member book every other month, mixed in with our themed choices.
As for how to pick them, I agree with random selection, so lets start up a list here of willing subjects!

Like I said...you want to risk letting me pick, I'm game.

I will have a hard time limiting myself to just good five choices!

so far, with only 4 volunteers, I will just put them up in the order they volunteered...

I'm new to the group, but I'd love to do this one month later in the year. July is my birthday month too if that hasn't been taken. I might end up picking some weird ones though, lol.

weird ones are welcome! I think we are doing every other month (Maggie, correct me if I'm wrong)... so that means you'd have August rather than your birthday month...
