Emphasizing exception above: Important Exception - Plurals and possessives formed with “s” are not acceptable for Book 2. Other forms of the first word can be used, such as HAVE/HAVEN'T or SING/SINGING.
More examples of books that work:
True and Future as in True Grit and Future Home of the Living God
Life and Feeling as in The Story of My Life and Feeling Sorry for Celia
News and Western as in News of the World and The Western Star
Fire and Friend as in The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Little Friend
Love and Revolution as in Eat, Pray, Love and Revolution
Acceptable: Titles with any forms of the original word that aren't just adding S or 'SKILL/KILLER
LUCK/LUCKY
etc.
Just trying to figure this out. Would something like like Kill and Killed or Killer work? They aren't plurals and possessives. Or is that too easy?

Yes, those are fine.
Have I got two that will workAlone With You in the Ether using WITH
and
Rotherweird which contains the lettres of WITH but I am sure is not a word in the dictionary - does that matter

It's fine since that is a "word" in the title. Names would also count, like David Copperfield used with LIFE, FIELD, FORCE, etc.
Would this work:The Other Half of Augusta Hope For book one word is HOPE
Book two: How (Not) to Start an Orphanage: ... by a woman who did word is ORPHANAGE

I get that you can't use the possessive form of the word from book 1, but does that mean you can't use a plural at all? For book 1 I had "The LAST Devil to Die" and for book 2 I had "Telling TALES. Two completely different words. Is this OK?

That's fine, the letters of LAST are found in the word TALES, but they are 2 different words. The plural just can't be of the original word. I thought it would be too easy if you could use BOOK and BOOKS, LADY and LADY'S, etc.
There isn't an expected total page count listed, so is it safe to assume you don't require one. Because I would like to use the Time Machine (time) and The Alchemist combined they are only 305 pages. Would this be acceptable?
Keli wrote: "There isn't an expected total page count listed, so is it safe to assume you don't require one. Because I would like to use the Time Machine (time) and The Alchemist combined they are only 305 page..."No page requirement for this task, each book just had to meet SRC requirements.

Read 2 books as described below:
Book 1 – There is at least one word of exactly 4 letters in the title (not subtitle). You will want to choose based on Book 2. You can ignore apostrophes, for example you could use MANS in Man's Fate or ISNT in Tepper Isn't Going Out. There could be more than one word of 4 letters in the title but you will only use one for this task.
Required: State the word.
Book 2 – There is one word of 5 or more letters in the title (not subtitle) which contains the 4 letters in your first title. See examples and important exception below.
Required: State the word.
Example: Book 1: Big Little Lies – 4-letter word LIES
Book 2: Letters of LIES can be in the same order – The Lilies of the Field has LIES
OR letters can be in a different order – The Silent Patient has SILE
OR letters can be separated – Slippery Creatures has SLIE within the word
All the letters must be within one specific word of 5 or more letters
Important Exception - Plurals and possessives formed with “s” are not acceptable for Book 2, so, for example, you can’t use The Tale of the Body Thief and Tales of the City as your two books, and you can't use Lady Boss and The Boss's Daughter.
Letters of the 4-letter word do not have to be 4 different ones – you could use the word MOON as in Moon Tiger, then use The Unhoneymooners, Song of Solomon, etc. for your Book 2. For Book 2, you can use a longer version of the word in Book 1, such as BOOK and BOOKSELLER, BOOKSTORE, NOTEBOOK, etc.
