Heartless by Marissa Meyer is a retelling/re-imagining of the Queen of Heart's backstory from the Lewis Carroll story, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. This is classic addition to the trope of redeeming villains by "explaining" their sympathetic backstory, forcing the reader to wonder if they were ever really a villain. In my own opinion this trope is over done and the instances of it being done well are few are far between. This book does the trope some just and if you love this trope I would recommend it, but if this trope doesn't stand out to you as something you would like then I expect you might be dissapointed. The word building and atmosphere are possibly the best part of the book although the romance story is bland and boring. Most of this book was hard to get through and only the last 100 or so pages added anything new and interesting to the original book in my opinion.
