Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9538 comments Great list as always. It prompts two thoughts from Bouchercon:

-Dog Treats and Death reminded me of a book and author I saw at an event call "Author Speed Dating." The book is Devil's Chew Toy by Rob Osler. Turns out it does not have a dog as the protagonist as the title suggests, but it sounded like fun and Osler was engaging so that's all it takes to get it on my TBR, LOL.

-Megan Abbott was there and I didn't see her panels but she read a short story at an evening event called "Noir at the Bar" where 8 or 9 authors read a short work. Hers gave me chills. It may be from Beware the Woman from its description. I'll post what I remember and you can tell me. (view spoiler)

Ann (annrumsey) | 17046 comments Carol, What fun at Bouchercon!! yes highly likely the panel discussion reading by Megan Abbott was from her Beware the Woman. The entire book gave me chills. I actually had to put it aside for a bit to shore myself up for reading the rest. It was my first by her and well written, VERY suspenseful; I will try another.
Several of the books I listened to this month were disturbing enough to have me skip around on my listening to settle my head to continue listening. Two I was determined because of the authors, David Joy and Karin Slaughter, who are must reads. The subject matter was the catalyst and extremely well written and important to read.
Two others the titles kept me going (Beware the Woman was one) and None of This Is True.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17046 comments Dan, lol not directly. The brain book was fascinating. I grabbed the audio after hearing about it in a podcast. I sometimes do that with non fiction that has an interesting idea and don’t always read the entire book due to time constraints, etc. This one held my interest for the entire book. Fascinating stuff. Scary too.
My month was more like an October Halloween scary line-up! Lol
Unfortunately the talking dog was in a not very well written plot.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17046 comments Gail, I will read more by the author! Hope you enjoy it too. Nilima Rao’s setting, characters, and the social/caste historical situation were well written and eye-opening.
She has a blog about her experiences researching the book which had close family connections drawing her to tell the story.
I can’t find her research blog link right now but this Sisters in Crime link has a summary: https://sistersincrime.org.au/across-...
