Hello and Welcome to Team Jazz!

I'm Judith (she/her/hers) and your captain for this round of wheels and I'm also one of the mods of the group behind this musical journey.

We have a lot of fun things in store for you and please ask questions here in the thread as there are many moving pieces.

Personally speaking I live in the US on the East Coast and professionally am an economist for the USEPA in the toxic chemical office. Outside of work and reading, I spend most of my time chasing after an active 5 year old. I read almost any genre of books and am always looking for new recommendations.

I think we have a great team and am looking forward to getting to hang out together for the next 10 weeks!

A wee bit of housekeeping. . .

If I could clearly tell it was your shelf for wheels, it’s linked above. Please check it’s correct! Copy paste was involved so something may not be correct.

For everyone else can you please create and post a link your wheels shelf here in the thread? Then I can add the links above.

Thank you!

message 16: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4285 comments Hi all, My name is Lexi (she/her/hers). I live in Atlanta, and I work in global health and parasitology. I enjoy reading fantasy and sci-fi, and been enjoying mysteries recently. I have co-captained before with Judith, and really enjoy Wheel. I’m currently in central Africa for work and will be flying home a few hours after the challenge starts. I’m always open to book suggestions especially fluffy ones for a long flight.

Also, just a reminder that all books must be started after wheel starts, so you have over a week to finish anything you already started.

Please feel free to ask any question now and throughout.

Lexi's reminder about all books needing to be started after the start of wheel reminded me of a question for the team.

Mods built in the countdowns into the spreadsheets this year. If people want a separate link though, I can make one. Is the countdown in the spreadsheet okay for everyone?

message 18: by Michael (new)

Michael Thomas (mjthomas7980) | 608 comments Hi everyone!! :) I'm Michael (he/him). I'm from Indiana and by day I'm an accounting analyst, by day/night I'm usually found watching movies or reading ofc. I generally watch around 7-9 movies a week, working from home has made this possible! Through the reading challenges I have done this year - I've learned that I'm into way more genres than I used to think, so I'll give anything a chance. Even the fun stuff that ends up in the backroom BOM.

I'm new to this co-captain role, but I'm enthusiastic and I don't sleep so I'm available most hours of the day to ask questions or assist with spreadsheets!

Jazz is not a genre that's high on my list of faves (generally I listen to Pop/R&B) but I know we're gonna have a great team and have some fun!

Melanie (mvalente89) | 1029 comments Hi everyone, I'm Melanie (she/her/hers). I live in New Jersey with my husband and our two cats and I work in the finance department at a publisher. I've been work from home for 3.5 years now so I tend to watch a lot of TV shows during the day while working (currently doing a rewatch of Charmed). I primarily read romance and thrillers with the occasional sci-fi or urban fantasy thrown in. I'm not big on high/epic fantasy but there aren't too many genres I actively avoid and I'll read just about anything if it's for a challenge.

Here is my shelf.

Maddielucy(Patti) | 319 comments Hi everyone!! I'm Patti and I am looking forward to playing with you all. I live in Florida with my husband and 2 dogs. I love reading, golfing and drinking wine :). I'm currently getting over a killer cold, so you're not meeting me at my best. I love this challenge and am ready to start!!

message 22: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2247 comments Hi Guys, I did not realize teams were up. I’m from NYC, still soaked from yesterday’s floods. I’m in a reading slump since TT10 and hoping this will pull me out.
I don’t really like jazz music but am jazzed to be on this team. I’ll read stuff I usually don’t during these team challenges.

message 23: by Alisha (last edited Sep 30, 2023 08:19AM) (new)

Alisha | 329 comments Hi everyone!

I'm Alisha from Ohio, USA. I was on the same team as Michael in Towers! Hi again Michael!

I like to read a pretty wide range of genres. I also like lots of different kinds of music but this year has been dominated by Taylor Swift for me.

Looking forward to reading with everyone!

Here is my challenge bookshelf: wheels8

Works well for me!

message 25: by Susan (new)

Susan | 62 comments Hi All—I’m Susan (aka Lexi’s mom) and I live in Louisville KY. My go to genres are literary and historical fiction, sci fi/fantasy and mysteries. But I do these challenges so that I read outside my comfort zone. And I like the sense of urgency to find and read the book that just fits the next task.

I think this team is a group of veterans, maybe not for Wheel-a-thon but for challenges in NBRC. However, if you have any questions, please ask!

We have a tracking sheet set up for people to claim letters and indicate bonuses. It can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

It also linked in post 4 at the top of the thread so it can be found easily. Everyone should be able to edit the tracking sheet but if you have issues:
-First check to make sure you are trying to edit the tracking sheet and not the official team sheet as they'll look very similar. Only Lexi, Michael and I can edit the official sheet.
-If you are in fact in the tracking sheet, please post in the thread that there's an issue and I'll get it fixed.

Feel free to start grabbing letters. Right now we are keeping to 4 words to make sure we don't end up with more than one partial by the end of the round. As words fill up, we'll open more spellings.

On the tracking sheet there is a column for additional letters your book works for. I've never not needed to shift books around to get things to fit. That column is very helpful when we need to play book tetris.

If your book works for the color bonus, all you need to do is check the box and make sure you link and shelve the proper edition of the book that shows it's at least 50% of the color (in round 1, green)

The round 1 music bonus is fairly straightforward. It just needs to be one of the instruments from the list. There's 25 instruments on there and several are pretty common. For those just check the box and specify a location of some sort and which instrument. We can repeat instruments. But only one instrument per book.

A book can, however, work for a green cover and instrument bonus.

Judith (brownie72011) | 7486 comments Mod
As most of you are veterans, you are aware bonus points can be earned by participating in the BOM discussions. 20 points for answering at least 3 sets of DQs per book and 40 points if you write a set of DQs.

Book nominators get a guaranteed set of questions, so if someone from the team's nominations wins the vote, we don't have to rely on the randomizer to get a set of questions.

For November, Lexi's nomination for the adult/nonfiction BOM is close to first place. If you are interested in that one or don't have a preference, if her nomination wins, we have a guaranteed spot for DQs (meaning more points). Her book: Delilah Green Doesn't Care (Bright Falls, #1) by Ashley Herring Blake

For the Themed (Music) BOM my nomination, All Rhodes Lead Here by Mariana Zapata , is in second place but not nearly as close to the first one as Lexi's is.

Please vote for whichever book you'd actually like to read but if you don't have a preference, one nominated by a team member is always a good choice.

Links can be found in this post: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Hey team Jazz, just wanted to say Hi. Sadly, I'm not doing wheels this round, I guess it's the first edition I'm missing, but lot on my plate this last quarter, so, *very* hard choices had to be made. So, I'm living vicariously through all of you, which means, I'll be popping around from time to time.

Team country also made me their mascot, hence me wearing the cowboy hat :D

Hello! Welcome to the team so glad you are here :)

The low down on everything is in the top posts of the thread including a tracking spreadsheet.

The short of it is our word is GLOCKENSPIEL, looking for instruments in text (from the list of 25), and green covers

Give a shout if you have any questions and let me know what your wheel shelf is and I'll add that link to the post with everyone else.

Yes, the challenge starts in a little over 19 hours

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2447 comments for the musical instrument word, does it work if the word is in the book but doesn't refer to an instrument - for example accordion files?

No, sorry it needs to be the actual instrument

Michael Thomas (mjthomas7980) | 608 comments Here are some green cover books that I have read over the past few months that are pretty decent, if anyone is looking for some.

I'm Still Here Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness by Austin Channing Brown The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid In the Lives of Puppets by T.J. Klune The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (The Hunger Games, #0) by Suzanne Collins

This one is good too, but it's 2nd in a series:
Tokyo Dreaming (Tokyo Ever After, #2) by Emiko Jean

These also - but they are 3rd in a series so not as helpful:
The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets (Enola Holmes, #3) by Nancy Springer The Hand on the Wall (Truly Devious, #3) by Maureen Johnson
