Rules: check out the rules here. If you've questions, read them again, they should cover most questions. Still puzzled? Come here and we'll help.
Key points: books must be 100 pages; they have to be started after the countdown ends, and can only be used in the round they are finished in

Tracking Sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
We'll use this for everyone to add their planned, current, finished books, with relevant information, There are some columns that are locked for Danielle and I, but those should be obvious via the medium of colour coding!

BUT, if you hate sheets, are going to be app only or some other reason, you can do a completion post, which should include:
Link to the book edition you read
Date you finished it
List of letters and reasons
Any bonus info

Round One Info
Word: VIOLA POMPOSA
Cover colour: Red (we need 5)
Round One Bonus Tasks: find instruments in the text of books. (max 10)

Essential Information! - Team Rules!

Read this if you read nothing else!

This is a team challenge, which means we need to work as a team to maximise our fun, and points.
To do this, the number one behaviour is not reading. I know - shocker! The number one behaviour is communication!

All we ask of you is to let us know what is going on:
- When you finish books, for sure - especially if they are good books that you want to push into everyone's hands, and equally if it was a stinker to be avoided at all costs
- When you are not going to finish books you've claimed
- When life throws a curveball that's going to throw you off your game. We are fine (if sad) if you can't play because a tree has fallen on your house so you are focussed on that, or if you won the lottery and are off around the world. What we Do Not Like is if you vanish without a peep. We don't like chasing you (in case it's bad stuff), but we do need to know if you are going to go quiet or have to withdraw. If that happens, drop us a note here or via PM

Other key behaviours:
- Have fun!
- Be kind! In particular, remember that text based comms can land differently to the intent, so please assume things are written with kindness and from a positive place and that any offence taken is unintentional - give everyone the benefit of the doubt :)

Captains Actions
- We'll be checking that books are shelved, so please try and remember to put books on your challenge shelf when you finish them (or when you start), or accept that we'll pester you for a shelving.
- Dates ditto. Though we'll assume GR gremlins strike with date shenanigans!
- We'll be allocating books to letters in a way that makes sense to us. We don't do letter claims in this team. We WILL make a way to use all valid books each round, so you're reading will get us points!

Hello! Welcome to the team and the madness that is always the Wheel-a-Thon challenge!

This time round it's all things music, but music specific elements will be strictly optional only!

I think we are all old hand at the game, so whilst I'll link up the rules etc, I trust you to know what we are up to, namely: READING! and HAVING FUN!

I (she/her) am a big Britpop fan, so was annoyingly whiny at the other mods to get this team name - hopefully you all don't hate the music genius that sprang from across the UK during the 90s - Blur, Oasis, Pulp, Radiohead, Elastica, Suede, et al. Any particular favourite Britpop bands / songs? Or if that's not your cup of tea - what music do you want to promote?

✿~Danielle~✿ (dmh1) | 5791 comments I’m Danielle (She/Her) and from Wales.

Happy Wheel is back, it’s a fun one.

That is some good music, Cat.

I was at the hairdresser a couple of months ago and Babies (Pulp) came on just as I was paying and leaving. I had to spin out the process so I could listen a bit longer, boogie with my swish new haircut too! That's a happy song!

message 11: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 375 comments Hello everyone :) Glad the Wheel is back!

oooo Having grown up in the 90s and early 2000s, radiohead and Keane were definite favourites. Looking forward to playing :)

VNerdbooks (v_nerdbooks) | 5116 comments Woohoo!! I love that i am on Britpop, my favourite!!

I was incredibly lucky to be in the midst of the Britpop era, I went to Knebworth to watch Oasis with 250,000 other people and it was amazing, there were so many other bands playing there over that weekend, The Charletons, Kula Shaker (who I loved) Manic Street Preachers, The Prodigy to name a few, it was a wild weekend LOL.

message 13: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10264 comments Mod
Wow! I didn't get to Knebworth, but that must have been insane!

I got to Reading festival a few times. saw Foo Fighters when they were in the second, tented stage, which was all sorts of mayhem and brilliance - people climbing the struts and everything. I think the main stage was Stone Roses in their peak period of self-loathing, so they were lethargic and NOT good. never seen a main stage crowd so sparse!

message 14: by VNerdbooks (new)

VNerdbooks (v_nerdbooks) | 5116 comments lol yes I think Ian Brown started a downhill climb and it just got worse iirc.
I think he ended up down the alt-right rabbit hole protesting about masks, it's a shame

Saar The Book owl | 758 comments Hello, everyone! I'm glad it's Wheel - time again! I love Britpop and although I don't live in the UK, I grew up partially with it in my teenager years.

Andy (_btp) | 732 comments Hi Everyone
Andy joining from Ireland

would have to say, not the biggest Britpop fan
but then I see Radiohead on the list
are they Britpop?

In an effort to establish myself as the one who asks the stupid questions
how are we defining Britpop?
🤔

delighted to be on the team, looking forward to the challenge

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 6074 comments I am Marie from UK she / her

My music hails from the 70's Bay city rollers tartan trews and hot pants - NOT that you would want to see me in either nowadays. I am more easy listening and yes I admit it classical music now but I can go with the flow

Not getting any better at posting proper links but here is my shelf.

Lucy | 278 comments Hi, I'm Lucy from the UK, though I work night shifts so my timings might be slightly strange. Britpop might not be the genre I go for (according to my Spotify Wrapped that's musical soundtracks apparently) but I like it well enough.

I'm really looking forward to stepping back into a reading challenge, I always have a good time with it!

message 27: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2160 comments Hello all! I'm Sarah from the UK. As soon as I saw the team names, I guessed Cat would have grabbed Britpop, haha! Pretty happy with that, at least I have a knowledge base there, whereas current music I am mostly clueless about.

My shelf is wheel-8‎

message 28: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10264 comments Mod
@Andy: I mostly define it as 90s guitar based UK music. Radiohead's first two albums, Pablo Honey and The Bends, certainly qualify as Britpop I'd say, even if later albums are less so.

@Sarah: hahahaha less "Cat snagging it" and more "Cat threatened a tantrum if it wasn't included on the list and she didn't get it!" It's not pretty, behind the curtain, sometimes! ;-D

I immediately remembered your task for the 90s theme SRC, as it had me humming all that season. OK Computer was a favourite album of mine, even if I have never knowingly listened to any later Radiohead. They got all weird after that I think, and it didn't appeal.

message 31: by VNerdbooks (new)

VNerdbooks (v_nerdbooks) | 5116 comments I'm starting to look through my books to find one of the more obscure letters lol, 99% of my reading is via my ear, so I have a few narrators that would work I think

Fab! We have a tracking sheet that we are going to use (thanks, Danielle!) - everyone can pop their planned books on if they want: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

For round 1 we are spelling out VIOLAPOMPOSA - that's a LOT of Os!

Also, to maximise bonus points, we need 5 red covers (50%+) and 10 musical instruments from the list:
Accordion
Bagpipe
Banjo
Bassoon
Cello
Clarinet
Drum
Flute
Guitar
Harmonica
Harp
Mandolin
Marimba
Oboe
Piano
Piccolo
Saxophone
Trombone
Tuba
Ukulele / Ukelele
Viola
Violin
Xylophone
Zither

message 33: by Marie (UK) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 6074 comments I am much better if I don't plan to much in advance.

I do have at least 3 obvious O books title / author

nothing that will obvioulsy have a musical instrument in but am sure will come across something

Are we just doing RED from looking at cover or do we have to use tineye. Tineye and I are not always on friendly terms

I have Edge by Jeffery Deaver and Payback in Death (In Death, #57) by J.D. Robb maybe Blessed Are Those Who Thirst (Hanne Wilhelmsen #2) by Anne Holt works

message 34: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 278 comments I've got a few O and red books to read. I did a quick search of my Kindle for the musical instruments and I've got one for all of them except the Marimba. There is a lot of crossover with those books however so I don't think I have as many as it looks.

Not sure what to pick first!

message 35: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10264 comments Mod
We only need 10 instruments, so don't feel like we have to get a bingo of them all - unless we want that as a private team challenge? Could be fun! :D

Marie, we are using good ol' eyeballs, not tin-eye, don't worry!

message 36: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2160 comments By chance, I have a couple of red covers to start with. I don't mind if they don't get used, I was going to be reading them anyway. ;)

I'm up for reading all the instruments, just for fun. I bet we could do it between us no problem.

message 37: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10264 comments Mod
I bet we could! And I have a marimba! (Natives, by Akala, so not an O, but an A is pretty acceptable!)

Who else is in?!

message 38: by ✿~Danielle~✿ (new)

✿~Danielle~✿ (dmh1) | 5791 comments Sure :)

message 39: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 375 comments Definitely up for trying to get all the instruments for fun!

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 6074 comments i will join in anything

message 41: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 278 comments Sounds like fun! Just to double check, any books we read need to go to the spell it out but we can get bonus points for red colours or musical instruments but not both?

(I found Natives really interesting, Akala writes really well so I hope you enjoy, Cat!)

message 42: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10264 comments Mod
Yup, books need to go to the spell-out, and then we can get the bonuses on top. but we can use one book for both bonuses of colour cover and instrument in text, We can find multiple instruments though.

Lucy | 278 comments Cat wrote: "Yup, books need to go to the spell-out, and then we can get the bonuses on top. but we can use one book for both bonuses of colour cover and instrument in text, We can find multiple instruments tho..."

Thank you for clarifying :) So if I get a red book that covers the letter O with a piano in the text, that's pretty much bang on?

Lucy wrote: "So if I get a red book that covers the letter O with a piano in the text, that's pretty much bang on?"

Exactly! even better if it can cover multiple letters - true perfection is covering ALL the letters plus both bonuses, but we don't expect that! :D

NEWS!

The Mods have set up a fun game for while we are waiting for the turntable to start. Check it out here!

This is entirely optional, doesn't require more than a willingness to share the possibly dubious music on your playlists and your ability to make creative links to your current book!
