Book Nerds' Book Reviews Monthly Group Reads discussion

My book club was considering reading Beach Music by Pat Conroy. It's pretty long. Does it read fast or slow? Depressing? Uplifting? what did you all think? No spoilers - the book is on my stack to read, just haven't picked it up yet. :)
