Hi! I am from Belgium and we got some great books here that talk about Belgium during the world wars. I recently read 'Wil' from Jeroen Oleyslaegers. You can find my review about the book here (writing Dutch, English below): https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... My alltime favorite will remain band of brothers i think.
the paper girl of paris by jordyn taylor. READ THIS BOOK TRUST ME!!!! it's one of my favorite books EVER
GENERATION KILL by Evan Wright who was embedded with young Marines cutting the first wave into Iraq in the Iraq War. I thought it was it gave both sides of a very controversial operation, but leaned heavily the way you would think the press would lean. It was otherwise well written and hard hitting.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...
HORSE SOLDIERS: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan by Doug Stanton which is also a true story about the first wave into Afghanistan. Very amazing story that you would never forget.

Winds of war by Herman wouk is a great read. It tells the tale of the build up to the second world war, right though to the attack on Pearl Harbor. War and remembrance is the second part of the series, but be warned it's a really long book.
Oh, totally forgot that I read Peach Blossom Spring last year is excellent and Our Man in Tokyo: An American Ambassador and the Countdown to Pearl Harbor. Both are excellent.
The Winter Soldier by Daniel Mason, which I thought was relatively obscure but am happy to say has 12,000+ ratings here on Goodreads. There must be a bigger demand for bleakly comic novels about the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire than I thought. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
Love Letters of the Great War. Edited by Mandy Kirkby, it's a heartwarming collection of love letters between soldiers and their loved ones that just melted my heart and is one of my favourite books of 2021.
Emma 🫶 wrote: "The war that saved mY life- made me cry but AMAZING"I agree!
The sequel is just as good -The War I Finally Won.
The Ship by C. S. Forester.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6...
I first read it when I was in junior high school, because in the early sixties we were all watching westerns and WWI and WWII movies on TV. I wanted to read something about the navy because that was a little different. I forget if it was around the house or if I bought it as a paperback. I know I must have read it pretty quickly and enjoyed.
Recently picked a used copy and reread it. I was amazed at how good it was. Very well written, from continually shifting points-of-view, it covers one day's action, mainly on one ship in a convoy being sent to relieve Malta. Despite how prosaic the historical event seems, it was very engaging. A real page turner.
Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption is a 2010 non-fiction book by Laura Hillenbrand. Unbroken is a biography of World War II veteran Louis Zamperini, a former Olympic track star who survived a plane crash in the Pacific Theater, spent 47 days drifting on a raft, and then survived more than two and a half years as a prisoner of war (POW) in three Japanese POW camps. This book had me "mad as a wet hornet", in tears, frustrated and all the emotions. Written beautifully and Louis Zamperini was certainly a survivor and hero in my book.
Just finished, as in five minutes ago, Pont Neuf. It's an Audible Original. Usually those are terrible, but I very much enjoyed this one. It was a short listen and the reader largely did a good job. I had objection to the pronunciation of a few words and to a couple of transitions, but overall enjoyable listening. The book was a bit of a gut punch, but it's about war, so it should be expected.
