Heads up… I’m still number two in line for this at the library so not sure if I’ll have it exactly on the first or not. The library has 12 copies so hopefully a couple come back this week 😂 If not, I can play catch up once they do. On a totally separately note, we’re getting cows today!! I’m so excited!!
Cows?! Milkable cows? Wow! Sounds really exciting. Cows are lovely creatures.I am all ready for Demon Copperhead, starting Sunday. I have a little fun book to take me through til then - The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett. I will have to squeeze in Jamaica Inn byDaphne du Maurier before Oct 18th for my “real life” book club, but I don’t think that will take much time. It actually is my selection, so it won’t look good if I don’t read my own pick!
Are we going to set a speed to read at? We seem to go at a similar pace, and if we keep in touch we can probably co-ordinate well enough? What do you think?
Yep! We’re milking a cow in the mornings now. She’s unfortunately not the best at standing still though and has knocked the bucket over two days in a row! Which is very unfortunate since I think we may be addicted to the smell of fresh milk now lol. Rooster Shelly is doing well. And we’re getting lots of eggs from the hens now. I agree, I think we usually read around the same pace so we’re probably good to just start on Sunday without a schedule. I don’t think we’ve ever stuck to what we’ve said anyway 😂. If we need to adjust we can. I definitely don’t want you to miss reading the book you picked. It’d be embarrassing to show up and be the only one who hasn’t read it but showing up having read a different book seems like some kind of scheduling mix up I would do. 😂
I am looking forward so much to Sunday. I hope the book is as good as everyone says. Now I about to take the dogs to a park for a walk. 😃
Woo hoo! Today is the day! The book was staring at me last night tempting me to read early but I resisted. 😂🤣😂
I did start last night, but it was after midnight. Honestly! I read the first two chapters and can’t wait to get back to it.
That’s so funny!! We’ve been so busy today I still haven’t gotten to it. It’ll be two hours before I get back home and make up time 😂
Finally got to read a bit but having to stop already. You’re probably way ahead of me by now but I’ll be able to catch up tomorrow. I’m almost done with chapter four. Really enjoying it so far! I love the way it feels like I can see everything playing out and the areas but really there isn’t a bunch of detail really.
I have read through chapter 8, ready to start on 9 tomorrow. Yes, I’m enjoying it. Feels like it’s happening just down the street. Very immediate and local.
Just finished chapter 13. With I could keep going but I’ve got to get some sleep. I really hope his mom gets rid of Stoner but I’ve got a bad feeling that’s not gonna happen. Definitely not before he gets back home. :(
You said you were behind and now you’re ahead! I am done for the night so I will be starting with chapter 13 tomorrow. Remember the horrible guy and his sister who moved in/married DC’s mother? I can’t think of their names, but Stoner is just them updated, isn’t he? I wonder if he has a horrible sister. I’m glad we read the Dickens version first. I wonder if Demon will be sent off to boarding school?Any way, good night.
What is the cow’s name?
I’m not very far ahead at least! I really wanted to keep reading but my eyes said absolutely not. 😂 I thought boarding school was what his mother was going to tell him at that first home visit! I’m not sure if Stoner has a sister or not. Seems like he doesn’t havemuch of anyone. But yes, I think he’s supposed to be the Murdstones. I’m enjoying trying to figure out who’s who. It took a minute with the kids in the foster home for some reason when that should’ve been easier.
Just finished chapter 19. Stopping for the night here. I feel so awful for Damon!! I was way too excited to have Mrs. Gummidge show up. I love that poor woman. 😂
Well, I finished chapter 18, couldn’t manage 19 tonight. This book is so sad and there are so many kids with a shitty life, like Demon. And I ‘m sure there is more sadness to come…
Thanks for the warning. I shall endeavor to roar past you in a cloud of dust! 😉 Now to feed the “starving” dogs and cats. (Well, they are trying to convince me they are about to collapse from weakness.)
I finished chapter 20 yesterday that was it. Should catch up to you today though. I don’t like the new fosters at all. I keep comparing everyone to their counterparts in David Copperfield.
Hi Jess,I didn’t manage to read anything yesterday - boring errands and then we went to a concert that my hubby was interested in. It was great!
Today I am about to start chapter 28. I may read that tonight, not sure yet. Betsy is going to sort him out!
I just finished chapter 31. I don’t really care for this version of Peggoty. I miss the real one 😂 I’m not sure I even want to know what’s going to happen with Coach 🫣
I just joined this group and recently finished Demon Copperhead. After reading your comments, I realize that I need to read David Copperfield again. I never read it as an adult and your comments reminded me of all of this wonderful Dickens’ characters I had forgotten about.
Yeah, I’m not much into football, so it’s hard to get excited about. But she’s got Uriah Heep perfectly, hasn’t she?I’m stopping for the night after 33.
Hi Susan,We decided to read the Dickens first, and it does add to the Kingsolver, I think. Do join in whenever you want. 😃
My dad coached football most of my life so I recognize some of the football season madness and don’t need it in my books. 😂🤣😂. I agree about Uriah though. I thought the description of him was great. Not sure how I feel about Angus/Agnes. She’s not much like the original Agnes. Welcome Susan!! If you have time to read David Copperfield I think it’s totally worth it. I’m so glad we’re reading them both so close together. It’s adding something.
I am just starting to read for today, starting at chapter 34. We had a busy day, with a funeral of one of my husband’s oldest friends. He has known him for over 40 years. It was a big event - a large church pretty much filled. So I hope life will get back to a more normal rhythm now that is over. It certainly makes me think of my own mortality.
I’m so sorry to hear that! I pray for comfort for you all and his family! It’s really hard to lose a close friend.
I finished chapter 40. I have to take a couple of days away from Demon so I can read the book club book I told you about. I think it should take a couple of days. Sorry to do this, but I have to read it. I’ll let you know when I’m back.
No worries! I only read a couple chapters yesterday so I’ll catch up to you tonight and read something else until you get back. I hope you enjoy your other book!
Sorry, Jess. Jamaica Inn took a bit longer than I expected - great story though! I have stayed up til 2:30 to finish it. Back to the Demon tomorrow. I hope you aren’t too far ahead.
Not ahead at all. I was almost done with chapter 40 so I finished it and then read other books until you were done. So we’ll both be able to start 41 today. I’m glad you enjoyed your book club pick!
Hello! I’m just starting chapter 46. I had a headache that made it hard to read yesterday. Hopefully you didn’t get too far ahead of me but I’ll probably catch up today if you did.
Just finished chapter 49. I thought I’d get through more but my head ache came back. How are you doing
Sorry to hear about your headache. I suffer from migraines so I know how debilitating they can be. Hope you feel better soon.I am just about to start chapter 46. I read very little yesterday.
Dori doesn’t seem much like Dora. I don’t think it is very innocent or childlike to provide drugs to your loved one.
I keep thinking the same. She was stealing medicine from her dying father as well. How is that innocent? Even her love for her dog didn’t seem very Dora like to me. I’m curious what will happen with Angus here as well. In David Copperfield it was easy for me to see Agnes and David together but their relationship here seems much more sibling like to me and I can’t see it being romantic without it being weird. Maybe I’m expecting too much to have stayed the same?
Just finished! I’m not a fan of how it ended but I enjoyed it for the most part. Other than all the depressing bits that made me cry or want to cry 😂
