What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Sci-fi/Alternate history series, recent, maybe 2020 or so. 2 guys are sent back in time by aliens, one to sub-Saharan Africa, one to North America. Roman empire still exists and is at the height of it's power. The 2 guys were scientists working in that seed vault in Norway. Somehow (I really forgot the details) all life on earth ends except the 2 gentlemen in question. Advanced aliens send them back in time in an attempt to avert the event that kills everyone. They both start introducing technologies to the societies they are placed with.

Robert, what type of scientists (e.g., bio____)? Which country(s) are they from?

What do the aliens look like? How do the humans first encounter them?
