Chapter Nine / end of Part One

This is such an interesting set up, both the Arthurian magical system and Bree's experience as black woman dealing with explicit racism in the real world and as a part of the magical system.
I'm surprised Nick jumped in so easily to help Bree. He seemed pretty set on not doing this, but it would be very hard to say no to her given what she wants. Bree is definitely going to get herself in trouble over all of this.

I feel really bad for Alice, I think are going to get a lot worse before they get better.

After Bree is also a really interesting exploration. I think she's going to explode at some point. This copikg mechanism is not healthy or sustainable.

What Nick said about mesmering tells me he has had it done to him but for what? He's one of them so what would they need to hide from him. I might be making something out of nothing with this but I feel like it's going to be important. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 10: (view spoiler)[It took me a lot to finally pick up this book because IT IS DAUNTING but maybe I've just grown since I read the first book in the series because I am finding it as difficult to go through as Legendborn. It did take me some time to immerse myself into this world but I am remembering a lot of stuff as pages go by. It is awful that Sel is being casted as the traitor to hide what Nick's dad did and Nick is still missing. I am liking Lark so far but do not trust him 100% still. Bree is growing into her powers and it would be interesting to see how she learns to control them (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 23: (view spoiler)[The Order is so cunning for using Bree the way they did, I really thought they were ok with her being the Crown Scion but i guess not. Racism is quite prevalent in the Order. Alice saving Bree the way she did was super heroic and I absolutely loved her. And I guess I can start to trust Lark as well, he did save Sel after all. Bree being able to bring Nick into Arthur's memory that way is pretty powerful and I am curious to learn all about how she manages to do that. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 34: (view spoiler)[Damn that betrayal from Jonas is gotta hurt, although I realise he did try to kill Bree I am still sad that he died the way he did especially after hearing his side of the story. Alice is such an empath for feeling so bad for both Jonas and the demon. I did not like that all of them grouped together kinda and pressured Bri into fleeing instead of looking for Nick. I want to believe that Sel had a good reason for using mesmer on Bri and i am hoping they sort things out soon (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 48: (view spoiler)[This is getting too intense, Valec is such a funny interesting character and he has been very helpful to Bree and the others too. This being bloodmarked by The Hunter sounds really dangerous and I am curious to find out exactly what bargain has been made with the said demon. I was assuming this was the end of the series but now I am wondering that might not be the case since we are no where near an end tbh (hide spoiler)]

Finished: (view spoiler)[Yikes Arthur is so greedy for power he took over Bree's body. I was definitely not expecting something to happen between Bree and Sel but not complaining at all. I guess I like Sel even more than Nick atm. Nick and Sel teaming up to rescue Bree from Arthur's memory was the best thing ever. I did not doubt even once that Erebus would turn out to be the demon but in hindsight, all the clues were right there. I can't wait for the next book to see how exactly Sel and Nick manage to bring back Bree from Erebus' clutches (hide spoiler)]

Chapter Twenty-Five / end of Part Two

I was shocked to learn Nick was Arthur's scion and made my surprise he was going back into it for Bree even stronger.
I knew something had to have happened to Nick and his mom but this is way worse than I could have imagined. This poor boy, explains his need to help Bree with her quest.

I want to know why the Scion has to be so young. Was it just because of life expectancy at that time or were they intentionally keeping them young and biddable. This is definitely building to Arthur awakening which is that opposite of what Nick wanted for his life. Will he be able stop it? Can Bree help?

Bree's abilities are really interesting and will put her in danger if found out. How is she able to do all of this? It's just rootcraft, it's something different. I think her family at some point must have used that same magic, or maybe were a part of the Legendborn but were erased because of prejudice. Or is she from the line of Morgaine?

I'm really glad Bree has Patricia both for the therapy she desperately needs and for the magical instruction. It's also good for her to have another black person, someone who understands. The unmarked graves, the statue, so many things I wouldn't think of and this portrayal of the impact of all the microaggressions, the legacy and knowing places were built never intending you to be in them, it's powerful. Chapter Forty / End of Part Three
My god this book, I could not stop reading. I basically spent most of today reading this and I have no regrets

The Legendborn being colonizer magic and that whole explanation from Patricia was really eye-opening and interesting. I think the sides staying separate is damaging but also understandable. If they could combine their knowledge they'd have a better of understanding of it all, but given what Bree has experienced there is no way the Round Table would be open at all to that.

The memory walk Bree went on was fascinating. I want to know why again she is the only one who can be talked to like that. I think at some point her family must have been bloodbound, but at what cost? Who was it that released the Hellhounds and why? Definitely someone from the order but again why?

The irony that Sel is Shadowborn and has been pursuing Bree for that. It's different but still, come on man. They say all Merlin's are shadowborn because Merlin was and they are his descendants but the order is Sketchy and I wouldn't put it past them to create half-demons to have stronger Merlin's.

I loved Sel coming around to help her and their revelation even if it was a bit late and come on man seriously. I do feel bad for him, gaining these abilities at seven, as a child and being told his whole life he's going to go evil, no wonder he is the way he is. They are victims of this system. That revelation that he was in love with Nick, I love it. This book is just so good I can't. (hide spoiler)]

Bree is Arthur's heir, I LOVE IT! Fuck, that was such a great twist and another well-deserved middle finger at Nick's dad. Wow, so much has happened. I'm in awe of this book.

Alice is such a great friend and I am so happy she is now involved and in the know. But Nick is missing, Camlann is here and Nick's dad is still at large. I have no idea how all of this is going to resolve but I know I will enjoy the ride.

I hated that Arthur made them all bow to Bree. I mean take that all you racists but also Bree did not want it. She didn't want any of it and now look at things. The order is going to have to confront it's past. Not so easy to sweep the slaveowning under the rug when it results in this. There are some hard reckonings coming.

That revelation about Sel's mom. I love that she was friends with Bree's mom, but also poor her and Sel, she never did anything and wasn't unstable. I hate all the lies they've sown to keep people obedient and them in charge. Bree is all about the truth but I don't think it will be that easy for her expose it all, even with her position. I cannot wait to jump into the next book. I am so glad we did this buddy read so I finally read this after meaning to for like two years now.

Chapter Thirteen
(view spoiler)[Scapegoating Sel was awful. I hate the order. Him coming back to save her and then being captured was brutal but foreseeable. He should be her Kingsmage - though I do really like Lark, he's a great new character but no Sel.

I want to know what impact (if any) Bree saying no to the oath at the round table had. I really liked the scene with Arthur, it was a necessary reckoning because of course he'd be shocked by her. I also loved that he apologized for Samuel Davis. The fact that he a sixth century king gets that that is not okay and needs to be addressed while the others don't is telling.

Also I died earlier on when Mariah called Bree the heir to the throne of white dude magic, a great moment of levity. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter Twenty-Two
(view spoiler)[Wow, the Order is corrupt. I was not expecting that. I figured they would try to undermine her, but trapping her drugging her and mesemering her my god. I probably should have been tipped off by how they treated Sel, but wasn't. I am so happy that the mesmer didn't work on Alice, I am guessing that's because of Bree's power.

When the Order was arguing with Bree about rape and how that was irresponsible of Samuel Davis I wanted to rip my hair out. I did love Cestra's comment about how his disregard for women was the most believable part of the story and I hope that means she is going to be on Bree's side. I'm hoping her attitude was an act and a subtle rebellion against the experiment.

This plan to get rid of Nick and control the new Lancelot scion is awful and had better not succeed. The odds are stacked against them, hopefully they can get more allies, but also there is a war going on. All of these idiots are just making that harder to win. (hide spoiler)]

This book has gone a way I didn't expect at all but I'm enjoying seeing it play out.

Chapter Twenty-Seven
(view spoiler)[ This encounter with Kizia was fascinating. What does unauthorized and unregulated mean and who is this great devourer. Also Jonah's betrayal, that was rough. The Order needs some serious overhaul he's not wrong there but killing Bree was not the way to do it. I love that Alice showed him kindness. Poor Alice though, that was a lot to witness and Sel was not being helpful at all. Also poor William. They need to overthrow and end this somehow, but to do that they need to end the war and things aren't looking great on that front with what humans are doing to each other. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter Thirty-Four
(view spoiler)[ so many betrayals. Seriously Sel come on. The only ting I don't understand here is how he did it. He isn't supposed to have access to aether to do magic so I don't understand how he was able to mesmer Bree. The plot just gets thicker with Valac and this underground magic community. Alice to the rescue again. What a gem and I am so glad she's contributing and not just the non magical tag along. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter Thirty-Eight
(view spoiler)[I knew Vadic was Pearl'd kid. I felt very vindicated when that was revealed. All this detail on Sel and Nick's bond is fascinating. Is this love triangle going to end up with all of them together? I can dream lol. Sel being able to smell that she was with Nick in the vision is very interesting but also creepy. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter Forty
(view spoiler)[ Wow, so finding Nick did not go as I expected, par for the course this book. I hope we see him again. I don't know how he is going to keep safe without them, but I hope he does. And Holy hell Bree breaking the cuffs, I knew she could do it. I do wonder what impact this is going to have on Sel, they make an amazing team, hopefully they can work together and keep channeling like that without it becoming an addiction for him. Chapter Forty-Five
(view spoiler)[ Hold on she's bloodmarked by the hunter. Oh shit. Things just keep getting worse don't they. It makes sense why she is so so powerful but oh my god this is bad. She'll be like the ultimate fuel for him. I honestly have no idea how this is going to end or where it is going to go but I am having the best time. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter Fifty-Three

How is she going to get her body back? and what will the Order do now, they love Arthur so will they embrace him. Also please please let Alice be okay. I was listening to this chapter walking into work this morning and I have been distracted thinking about what comes next all morning. God, I love this book. (hide spoiler)]

Wow, I don't even know what to say about that. The end part was such a ride. I am so sad the next book isn't out and doesn't appear to have a publication date because I need it asap.

The microaggressions are done brilliantly, and it makes me cringe and don't know what to feel because - yeah, I can't imagine. It's flipping awful, this white, mostly male dominated world (and seems like it's probably been largely hetero until fairly recently too).

I'd forgotten about the aether/roots connection - I've forgotten a lot since I read it first time! I never know what to think when I've forgotten a ton; is it just my bad memory, or was it not such a good book as I thought at the time? For example, I still remember the vast majority of, let's say, The Hunger Games, even though I read it ages ago. It's hard to know.

At the moment it just feels like too much crammed in, and it's making it so s-l-o-w for me to read...

I think it was just because there were so many characters I didn't really have time to bond with them, if you know what I mean...

Well, that was a RIDE. And, yes, I see a love-triangle coming up (I hate it when tropes are forced in - I read an article about it that I wish I could find again... I'll look another time), but it feels kind of natural so I'm just about okay with it. And, being a massive prude (lol), the amount of 'spice' in this is fine for me. But no more, ta very much!

This was just SUCH a complicated book! I know it's a trilogy, but I think maybe Deonn could have spread it out a bit more and made it into a four or five book series. (Or more, depending on what the others are like!) I just feel like there was TOO MUCH in here for one book. The author's note was interesting (and I also had an author letter as this was from an old OwlCrate box I think); I feel like her explanation at the end kind of gave away that she was trying to get too much into it: grief (complex grief, PTSD, acute grief); generations grief; African American slave heritage traditions; AND the Arthurian legends. (which brings with it a whole lot more Issues: the Patriarchy; issues with Queerness; White Supremacy...)

So, yeah. With that HUGE a scope, I feel like she could have slowed down a bit to give us less of an info dump, and more feel of the characters. It's a chunky book, and could have been split in two to give more character development.

Having said that, I loved William, and I also loved the fact that Alice came back at the end too! I'd forgotten that part - a nice surprise that she doesn't go unnoticed. (I kept trying to remember whether had Dad gets back on her case - but not yet!)

I'm torn! I see why I gave it 4 stars last time, but I'm wavering...

Also, I seem to have missed exactly what 'Abatement' is: is that like Sel gradually becoming more demon the more he uses his powers? How does that work with the Legendborn? I'm probably being stupid :( Too much in my head! (hide spoiler)]

it was definitely a chunky book and hopefully the next two books don't dump as much more so review what was all discussed during this book. Despite the overload it didn't quite take away from the storyline.

Part One
(view spoiler)[ So I love this book and don't find it slow. I did the audio for all of this this time and the narrator is so good! It's hard seeing Bree suffering so much and not properly acknowledging it. The way she makes her way into the order is so fun and it’s so different reading it and knowing Nick's role and what he's getting himself into by agreeing to this. I really love the exploration of being black in the south, and entering spaces that weren't made for you. As a white girl this is not something I've ever experienced and it really made me think and reflect. This book really makes me think and reflect on my own experience and privilege as I watch Bree navigate the world. This is why reading diversely is so important and I love everything Tracy Deonn has done with this book.

Part Two
(view spoiler)[ These trials are super interesting though I admit I had totally forgotten about them. I feel bad for Alice and I'm eagerly awaiting when she's brought into the fray. Every time Bree is discriminated against or disparaged for not being from a legacy family I'm like just you wait. I had faith in Tor the first time but now knowing what she does in Bloodmarked I silently boo every time she's around lol. It's also hard seeing Sel be so wrong. I can't remember who the Goruchel actually is but it's totally one of the people defending Bree. I wonder whether the demons know who Bree actually is and that's why they keep coming after her, or if it's just a coincidence. Also William is the best, such a great guy. I'm glad Bree and Alice are okay now but oof that was rough. Root is is fascinating and I'm so happy she has Patricia to teach her.

Abatement is what happens to the Scions and their squires from beign called and using that power. They live short lives if they are called, only into their thirties. That's the price the spell demands.

Oh also it's not a trilogy there's going to be at least four, though I'm hoping for more. For me, it all worked together and I didn't feel like it was too much, but I definetly understand the sentiment, it is a lot.
