I find this to be very ironic.

I read Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher.

There are triggers; suicide being a big one. But I believe this book should be in schools. It should be in classrooms. I will go as far as saying it should be assigned reading.

Bullying and suicide to too prevalent and should be discussed openly. This book demonstrates the snowball effects that connect small events into bigger events into terrible decisions. I would rather a touchy subject be discussed in school where teachers express their support and concerns. Indirectly that opens a door where help can be sought.

4 years ago my daughter called me up after a seemingly minute issue happened at her school. She told me she wanted to die. I immediately started the process to helping her. It was a year of hell for both of us but we were together. This was a happy ending because I talk to her about touchy subjects. I make sure she knows I am safe and non-judgmental.

Banning books is a way to sweep problems under the rug hoping that it will go away. All it does is make the problem worse.

I read The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini last year. It's graphic and there are triggers in there for me that prevents me from ever wanting to read it again. With that being said, I agree that this may not be a book that should be in a school without parent awareness, but I don't agree that it should be banned. I do think it opens uncomfortable communication, but isn't that the best kind?
