I dont remember much except the hero (could be a ranger former knight) had a white horse and was branded an outlaw. he escapes to a forest, horse falls down a ravine?, he crawls until he comes to a clearing with two kids alone in a hut. He hides out with the family who are pig farmers?… eventually the bailiff comes and arrests the father of the family for theft? hero tries to help, but the father tells him to flee and save himself, as he really is guilty of theft. father is hanged in the townsquare.
IIRC this is an epic/fantasy novel.
