Challenge Rules & Announcements

Team Tracking Spreadsheet (for planning and to post completed books: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
You should be able to edit this file - if you can't let me know and we can troubleshoot.

If you don't want to deal with the spreadsheet and prefer to just post a completion post in the thread, please include title, author, any letters that task works for, any cover color or word bonus, and date completed.

PLEASE ASK if you have any questions on the rules or strategy. The main goal is to have fun and read... but for the competitive amongst us we'll let everyone know how we are doing vs the other teams.

Karolyn | 1041 comments Hello Team SOUL

Welcome to Wheels 8, we're thrilled to have a late addition team and get to play with all of you. Today/this weekend the co-captains and I will work on getting a tracking spreadsheet together for the team and will be posting key links, rules, ect, ect in the reserved posts above. Be patient with us the next few days as we get things set up.

In the meantime.... come say hello! I like it when people say hello. Share a bit about you. What do you enjoy reading? What kind of music do you enjoy? What do you think about Soul? Is this your first Wheel or your 8th? Are oranges or grapefruits better and why is grapefruit the wrong answer?

Happy Weekend and Welcome to Wheels!!!

Heather Milne | 535 comments Round 4 Genre List

Baroque
Bhangra
Bluegrass
Calypso
Electronica
Fado
Folk
Grunge
K-Pop
Mambo
Mariachi
Merengue
Motown
Noh
Polka
Rautalanka
Reggae
Salsa
Shashmaqam
Ska
Spiritual
Sufi
Tango
Yodeling (or Jodeling) (Note: either English or US ll / l variant acceptable)
Zydeco

Note: you must find the words exactly (so you can't find "electronic" - it has to have the -a ending), but if you find an exact match that isn't talking about the music genre (e.g. "he was a spiritual person" you can still claim it). And yes, we mean you can't use plurals, possessives or verb ending changes (bad luck if you find "he yodels" but no yodelling!

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 1397 comments Hiya my name is Nikki. I am just checking in quickly to let you know I am here as I am currently on my way to a dance competition but I will post a proper intro to myself and read through the thread a little later

message 11: by Laura (new)

Laura | 5524 comments I'm here! I'm a mom of 6, currently living in North Carolina. I love team challenges. I'll read just about anything for a challenge, except horror! My preferred genres are fantasy and Sci-Fi.

message 12: by Heli (new)

Heli | 510 comments Hi guys!
I'm Heli from Finland. I love mysteries and thrillers, but can read almost anything for a challenge. This is my fourht time participating in Wheels.
I like 80's rock and anything by Bon Jovi and Foo Fighters.

message 13: by Sofie (last edited Oct 07, 2023 01:55AM) (new)

Sofie | 81 comments Hi Everyone!

I am Sofie and I am from the Netherlands. I love reading Fantasy books, and occasionally, I like to annotate the classics. I also would be able to read anything for the challenge. This is my first time participating in the wheels however, I have done TTX.
My music taste will shift to whatever book I am currently reading.
I look forward to participating in this challenge, and I hope you all have a great weekend!

Stacey (boydsmom) | 1392 comments Hi everyone! I'm here -- I'm not always late for things. :)

I live in North Carolina in the States and will read about anything for a challenge except Cozy Mysteries. I'm going to a few book signings this year, so trying to mostly work through books for those, but can fit those around whatever needs reading. I have done multiple Wheels and Tower Teams since I started doing challenges a few years ago. And I am a relatively new convert to Country music.

Is our first word really xylophone??? Oy. I'll go start looking for Xs, Os and Ys.

message 15: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments Hey All!!

Please have a look at the first few posts. We've added links to the rules and info about Round 1 (yep, for our late signups karma has given us "xylophone" for our spell out word).

There is also a link to our tracking spreadsheet - this is for everyone to plan and/or list their completed books. If you have questions or issues with it - please ask.

Right now we are 5 hours and 1 minute from the official start!!! Remember that we can't start any books for the challenge till then... but we can plan all we want.

Karolyn | 1041 comments I should intro myself as well, I suppose.

I'm Karolyn and am very excited to be your captain this round. Your amazing co-captains and me are here to ensure you have fun and don't overstress (too much). I've co-captioned both wheels and tower teams a few times and it's always a blast.

I live in Missouri in the USA and work in agriculture. I live with my darling husband and three very spoiled cats. Nonfiction is what I read most, but challenges usually make me read more fiction - I like historical fiction and am getting more into sci-fi. And yes, I will read about anything for a challenge, even if it's terrible.

Oh, and I will not admit how long I spent this morning trying to get an image to post. I'll keep working on it, but might need to rely on all of you for funny pictures, memes, ect.

message 17: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 535 comments Hi Team!

I am Heather and one of your co-captains. I live in the Netherlands and I read a range of genres but I think over the next month or two I will be reading more horror than usual. However, I might read other genres as well.

I am not sure I like Soul music, I prefer Rock but I listen to a wide range of music. And as for the question about grapefruit or oranges, I have to say I really don't like grapefruit it is their bitterness. I like the sour taste like lemons though.

message 19: by Laura (new)

Laura | 5524 comments So, we're actually looking for Xylophone in text?

If you have a Kindle (not an app on another device, or a Kindle tablet, but just a Kindle), you can search all of your Kindle books at once for a word. I'm off to search for Xylophone.

message 20: by Laura (new)

Laura | 5524 comments I actually have it in 2 books on my Kindle! I can for sure read Elfhome, and over the course of 2 weeks I can probably manage the other one, too.

Elfhome

You can find any of:
Accordion
Bagpipe
Banjo
Bassoon
Cello
Clarinet
Drum
Flute
Guitar
Harmonica
Harp
Mandolin
Marimba
Oboe
Piano
Piccolo
Saxophone
Trombone
Trumpet
Tuba
Ukulele (or Ukelele)
Viola
Violin
Xylophone
Zither

In the text for this round.

If you look in rules and announcements, you'll find that xylophone might not be the worst word to have spun. And in fact the mods in their wisdom spun for an extra team while doing set up so you've been punished as much as the rest of us. We routinely forget that we will be doing the challenges along with everyone else.

Laura | 5524 comments That's a relief!

We can use any listed author, correct? That anthology that I posted above has an X author.

message 23: by Sophie, The other one (new)

If it is in the metadata (aka the stuff at the top of the GR page) then yes you can.

I'm butting out again now, so queries will go through Karolyn and Heather.

Stacey (boydsmom) | 1392 comments If anyone hasn't read Fourth Wing yet -- you could knock out an X or a Y. But I think it was BOM during TT, right?

If anyone on the team like audio books, Xe Sands narrates a lot of books.

Books with Asian characters/authors are another good place to look for X

Karolyn | 1041 comments Laura wrote: "That's a relief!

Laura - just to clarify, for Nightingale: An Anthology for Ukraine you can use initials from any author listed at the top of the Goodread's page. Typically that's the editor and maybe one or two others. But... it looks like for this book all the authors are actually listed up top - so you'd be OK. And of course, you can use a character name too.

Also remember we can use the names of translators (if translated) or narrators if you listen on audio.

message 29: by Karolyn (new)

Karolyn | 1041 comments Heather wrote: "Has anyone got any ideas for books that would work for X? I think I am going to look through my bookshelves tonight. Maybe find a character called Xander if I am lucky."

Here are a few lists. I am struggling off the top of my head.

Titles starting with Q, X, Z: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
Titles starting with X, Y, Z: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
X Authors: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/4...

Stacey - Fourth Wing is a great read and has a lot of letters. It was a BOM during towers, but if you haven't read it yet and like fantasy and dragons - it's worth a look.

We can pull lists for other letters if that would be useful... just ask and/or post more here.

I didn't mean to sound ungrateful for having a brand new team with my comment on the xylophone. Just personally, X, Y especially and sometimes O tend to be the letters I struggle with most often to find titles/authors for in spell outs.

I have read Fouth Wing, totally enjoyed it and would be up for a re-read, but its too soon. :(

message 33: by Sofie (new)

Sofie | 81 comments I could reread Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhou since it has been six months since I last read it, and I would be up to rereading it.

Additionally, I am, for some reason, trying to read all of Rebecca Yarros's books so I could prioritize those and use them for the Y. It wouldn't be Fourth Wing since I've already read that book 4 times...

Can I get opinions/a ruling on this one?

My go-to author for X is Meg Xuemei X. But be forewarned, if you pick-up one of her books, there is a very high spice level. And most of her books are reverse harem.

I’ll go ahead and do that anthology for another X. It fits my Space Life task this week.

According to tineye it is not white but a light shade of grey :( and I think it is maybe right.

I think that as long as you link the correct version on your shelf the link is not completely necessary in the SS. But it might be nice to have to check.

The second one looks a bit cream/pink… but would be glad for someone to argue.

I think the second one is a moot point. After I posted here I went to Amazon to make sure it was still in KU, and there is a different cover, with a different background color. :)

I'll try to squeeze Just Drop Out into my reading next week.

Laura | 5524 comments In the Jane Yellowrock books (specifically Blood Cross), would the Character Aggie One Feather work for an O? Would One Feather be her last name?

Yes, I think it is the character's last name as "One Feather" can be a surname.

message 49: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 535 comments Sofie wrote: "I was wondering if the standard edition of The Great Gatsby is a white enough cover, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald What do you guys think?"

It has to be at least 50% white I don't think this cover is. Sorry.

message 50: by Laura (new)

Laura | 5524 comments Just to verify, because the spreadsheet specifies page # OR time stamp for the instruments. If we listen to an audio, just the time at which the word occurred works? Because I can go to Amazon and hope they have a searchable sample, but if I can just give the time stamp, that's easier. :)
