Books covering tens of thousands of years, yet from the point of view of realistic people. No overt fantasy, just reasonable science as we currently understand, with some minor hand waving.

Parts are sad, uplifting, shocking, and otherwise emotionally engaging. Overall enjoyable for many many hours.

I agree, it's very well written and is a very compelling story.

The Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson spans almost two centuries and covers the colonization and terraforming of Mars. The series consists of "Red Mars," "Green Mars," and "Blue Mars."
