Oct/Nov '23 GR: Mama Ruby
I’ve made it to chapter nine and I don’t even know what I’m reading lol. It’s absolutely ridiculous
I’ll wait for people to catch up before going in on how I feel about the chapters so far.

Uh oh, lol. I have mine on audio but haven’t started it yet. Hopefully, I start it tonight. I am in a play that opens Thursday, so having my lines and blocking completely memorized is paramount.
Oh that sounds fun. I’m sure you’ll do great!!
We have two months to read the book so there’s no rush, make sure you got those lines down girl LOL😊

Good morning 😊Awaiting the arrival of my paperback...
Ruby Jean & Othella... As teens... This should be quite enlightening, as well as interesting...
I’m with whoever said what in the world am I reading? It’s early like 1930s but this Ruby is something else . And what is up with that lady TELLING her what she’s going to do with this baby…
Okay, I can see I need to hurry up and get to this. I just went over all my lines (my hubby help me run lines) so I might start it while I do my laundry.
Now I see what y’all talking about! What AM I listening to? I mean really, lol. Mary Monroe is flat out crazy. Beulah didn’t help matters, that’s for sure, smh.
It’s the comment: By the time Ruby was 12, she knew more about sex than her mother! I was like W H A T!!
It possible, I suppose. But since it is the 1930s, if it is true, these folx are waay ahead of their time, lol. I am doing laundry and almost spilled the bleach, lmbo!
Simone should be shamed of herself for the way she is raising her childrun. And douching! It’s a wonder they still alive.
The vanilla extract threw me for a loop! I am on Chapter 12. I will wait till other folx get to that part - the night at Othella’s party - OMG!
Lololololol y’all see what I’m talking about!!! It’s crazy 😝 now I have to catch up because I needed a break from their foolishness 🤦🏾♀️
OMG that bleach nonsense has me ready to punch the phone lololol

Dang, you gals are flying through this book already. I just pulled my copy from the book shelf and read the back cover. I did not know Mama Ruby had a baby girl in her teens! I will be starting this one as well as the Kitty Karr book.
So, reading this book gives me some insight to the first Mama Ruby book. I see why Maureen was like she was, she took after her mom-not too bright, lol. Now that I know Ruby and a pretty baby girl…..we’ll two wrongs don’t make a right but… I can see where the idea grew from.
There’s more? I saw in Amazon that there were three books and that this was book 2 but in Hoopla where I got my copy it says this book is book 1.
The Upper Room is book one and Mama Ruby is book two. What is the name of book three? I can’t help but feel sorry for Simone, she has had it hard, but I still don’t like her.
There is a letter to her readers in Mama Ruby dated June 2011. In it she states Mama Ruby is NOT the sequel to The Upper Room, but the Prequel. She stated “the sequel is in the works”. (That would be Lost Daughters, I’m guessing. )
Is Othella’s brother Ike the man she was married to that she killed? Is he Virgil’s dad? I forgot what that guy’s name was.
Ah, Angel! What a good question though. I don’t know, might be. But if I remember correctly, Ruby didn’t really marry anybody. We just need to keep reading to find out. I cannot turn that crazy book back on tonight, lol. I’m looking forward to tomorrow😂
I’ve been trying to copy and paste the flyer and it won’t work 🤷🏽♀️. I don’t know why the picture of the flyer won’t come up.

I kept wondering how old they were. Fifteen is just too young for all that. I might put it on right before I retire in another hour or so.
So… it just ended like that? 😳😳😳. Now I got to go read the first book in the series, The Upper Room, to which this book is a prequel for. The ending was very anticlimactic to me… I feel some type of way tbh for all that to happen and then that last sentence 🤦🏾♀️
Okay, I can hardly wait to get back to this book! And now that I know there is a book three - I am excited! I read the Upper Room already - I look forward to hearing your thoughts on that one.
I’ve started The Upper Room. I’ve written my review of this book and I can’t wait to see how everyone else feels about this read. Im excited to get to these girl’s adult adventures because their childhood (if we can call it that) was something else!!! 😂
@Bookzamillion, we all were introduced to Mama Ruby via the Upper Room and let me tell you, that woman was bat shit crazy! Pardon my language. I think that’s why I was anxious to read Mama Ruby the prequel, because I was hoping to find out why she was the way she was. We have a thread on The Upper Room, so feel free to contribute to it as you go along in the book! By the way, I am amazed at how fast you finished Mama Ruby. I will be the one still reading it 3 months from now!
If it were not for the audio, it would take me two months to finish one book. But with the audio, I can multitask. I try to listen to most books. I agree with Angel, Mama Ruby is a narcissistic witch. The prequel is helping me to understand what happened to her and made her turn out the way she did.

Synopsis: Growing up in Shreveport, Louisiana, Ruby Jean Upshaw is the kind of girl who knows what she wants and knows how to get it. By the time she’s fifteen, Ruby has a taste for fast men and cheap liquor, and not even her preacher daddy can set her straight. Only Othella Mae Cartier, daughter of the town tramp, understands what makes Ruby tick.
When Ruby discovers she’s in the family way, she’s scared for the first time in her life. After hiding her growing belly, Ruby secretly gives birth to a baby girl at Othella’s house. Othella talks Ruby into giving the child away–and with the help of a shocking revelation, convinces Ruby to run off with her to New Orleans.
But nothing can erase Ruby’s memories of her child–or quell her simmering rage at Othella for persuading her to let her precious baby go. Someday there will be a reckoning. And Othella will learn that no one knows how to exact revenge quite like Ruby Jean Upshaw.
