Question about Ali Smith’s Autumn, and Brexit

The fences, as I remember them, are fictional and symbolic of the main theme of the book, which I took to be the many ways we are divided. I interpreted it as social commentary on our polarized society.Note: I have no doubt that signs telling people to "go home" were real but the fences surrounding a specific piece of land are not, as far as I know.
I gave this book 4 stars, and I generally like this author and her writing. But regarding Brexit, I had some strong opinions about the author's approach. Here is a link to my review.
[Edited to change my comment to a link to the review rather than the quote from my review. My comments were VERY opinionated, and people can choose if they want to view them or not.]

It was written during or after the Brexit vote, and there are references to fences, a fenced off area between borders, signs telling people to go home, etc. Her mother’s neighbors ostracized her, but it wasn’t clear to me why, or where she lived (or where she was from). I don’t know where the fences were. Now I’m confused and I don’t know the right search terms to use (it’s nonlinear, on audio, and i can’t find the first mention of it).
Does anyone remember this part, or have a quick suggestion about the fences? (I don’t want to read all about Brexit.)
