Play Book Tag discussion

I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting, but this wasn't it. Dracula is the original vampire story first published in 1897. In my mind I thought the whole story took place in Transylvania at Count Dracula's castle. After an initial meeting with hid solicitor Dracula moves to London where strange things start happening. This was labeled winter by 27 people, but really didn't have much connection to winter. I read this because it was one of those books I've been meaning to read for a while. The story ran hot and cold for me. There were some really engrossing passages and some that just seemed to drag on and on. I actually thought the best part of the book was the very beginning. The writing was dark and sinister and very atmospheric. I found the ending to be kind of rushed and anti climatic. Oh well now I can cross this off my list.

I never managed to get through this one. Like you said, it just dragged on and on and on … Once it had done that for literally hundreds of pages (and hours of listening), I gave up.

Dracula actually isn’t the original vampire novel though, I was under this assumption when I picked it up as well. It was one of the very first, but there are a couple that predate it - Carmilla being one of those. If you’re looking for atmospheric, haunted castle in the woods vibes, I would highly suggest it. Bonus, it much much shorter than Dracula and makes for a very quick read!

I know Dracula is a classic and people are very passionate about it’s literary merits, but it’s just not for everyone.

I just read it a couple months ago for the first time and I found it not as bad as I had feared. However, I was a literature major and got used to reading 19th century classics. There are certainly flaws in the character development and pacing of the plot.
