Just finished. <3 That was a wild ride. I don't want to give away any spoilers. But it reminded me a little of R.L. Stine's Fear Street series, only with the Stephen King other worldly twists. It was a fun read.
I was able to rent Joyland this morning. I read it years ago. I have Revival on hold at the library. Will enjoy reading along with the group. Thanks
I've read this many times, but my favorite was listening to it in the car trip from New York to Bangor with my husband and daughter. The audiobook finished just as we were pulling into the hotel parking lot. It was Ka! And they actually liked it!
One of my favorites. I read it when my oldest was starting college so perfect timing. I love the details about carny life.
I feel like there’s divine intervention at play with the order I read King’s books in. Much like I read Gerald’s Game directly before Dolores Claiborne, I read Revival right before this.
5 stars for me. Sometimes I get annoyed with King's slowburn but in Joyland I loved it. Loved the description of the carny life and starting a first job in general. likable character. few people mentioned revival, is it related to joyland in some way? havent read it yet.... SPOILER!!!!!!!!!: I've been trying to find some motifs that are included in Kings books that I read , and mike seems to have the shining too? SPOILER OVER.
Joyland is not technically related to Revival, but there are some definite parallels/callbacks. Or I guess, Revival would have the callbacks, since Joyland came out first!
I read this back in April and absolutely loved it. I felt lots of emotions while reading this. It is a slow burner but I didnt mind as i was really invested in the main protaganist and his story. Really enjoyed the descriptions of the carnival life and the language that only carny folk understand. Honestly, was just an overall good read. I hope you all enjoy it as much as i did
This sat on my shelf for a couple of years, I don't know why I put it off. It's a brilliant book, with great characters.
One of my all time SK faves. Have listened to the audiobooks at least 8 times!! Would LOVE to see this in a movie!
Simone wrote: "One of my all time SK faves. Have listened to the audiobooks at least 8 times!! Would LOVE to see this in a movie!"It's one that would really make a great movie! I think his books with no supernatural element are the best adaptations. Not that some with supernatural parts are not, but they tend to be a crapshoot.
The audiobook of this is one that I own, so I've listened to it a few times as well. It's great on the page and in the airwaves.
This audio was perfect for long trips. Gave it to my daughter for those long drives to college. Everyone loved it, and it made the miles fly by.
I read Joyland in two nights and was trying to stretch it out bit couldn't keep my paws off it. HaHa. I loved it but I want to hopefully talk about the story a little with other readers. Thanks again for the chance to do so.
I finished Joyland in a couple nights reading slowly and for the pure enjoyment. I love early King and these three atypical true crime entries are very relatable and poignant as well as injecting a true crime and bittersweet component of growing up. I loved it.
I listened to this last week, and totally agree that it would make a great movie... or Netflix limited series.Kandice wrote: "Simone wrote: "One of my all time SK faves. Have listened to the audiobooks at least 8 times!! Would LOVE to see this in a movie!"

If they set it in the timeframe King does it would be retro, maybe film it so it looks older. I always prefer the series based on books because they can really delve into the characters and setting. The setting for this one is as much a character as any of the people.
King certainly loves to repeat certain motifs in his works and I love looking for them now that I have read a few of his books- (SPOILERS) religious parents with a crap relationship with their kids because of religion (carrie) , car accident and death of child (pet cematary), someone having the ability to hear/see things (shining) etc etc. SPOILER OVER.
Hi Fellow King Readers,I have finished this month's reading of Uncle Stevie's "Joyland" and have posted my review that can be found in the following link if you are interested:

You will probably not be too surprised to hear that I really liked this one. It seems that many readers have similar feelings.
Anyway, to great reading and discussion everyone - best wishes until next month!
I'm right with you on this one, Scott. As I already noted this was an in-car listen on trips to Yosemite with the kids. They loved it as much as my wife and I did, and it's still one of our favorites.

I can just imagine listening to it while driving on the freeway, highway, and country roads as a perfect setting. It's just the right length for a road trip.
I posted my review of Joyland this morning. Thank you to the club for such an enjoyable reading experience.

Finished. I'd forgotten how it panned out (most of the details, really) so it was lovely to re-experience.
I was a little late in finishing this one, but was able to make it my first book of 2024.I very much enjoyed the story of Devin, as narrated by Michael Kelly, who did a fantastic job.
I heard somewhere, but was unable to verify, that Stephen King chooses the narrators for his audio books. He, or whomever does so, has a knack of selecting the perfect voice for each novel. So much good!
