Marra is the third daughter of her royal parents and may possibly end up being the last hope to save their kingdom. Her oldest sister was married off to a rival king who covets his wife's land. He is a vicious tyrant and his wife is soon returned to her family as a corpse. Wishing to placate the monstrous king, the family agrees to marry off their second daughter to him as well. She endures pregnancy after pregnancy to produce an heir and it is feared that once she gives birth to a son, her existence will be in dire jeopardy. Marra, who has spent several years at a convent, knows that she must rescue her sister and that can only mean that she must kill the king. She is accompanied on her quest by a gravewitch, fairy godmother, a dog made of bones and a ex-knight. Their adventure is fraught with dangerous situations that just may keep Marra from saving her sister.

I really enjoyed the humor in the story and the inventive situations the group of travelers face. I'm sure my rating of 3 stars suffers from my lack of enthusiasm for the fantasy genre.

Glad you had fun with this. I see it as more fairytale retelling than typical fantasy. The author is also most known for her YA and younger writing which for me added to the feel of a fairytale.

But lordy, I loved Bone Dog!

I think Bone Dog was my favorite character!
