MariaSt I want to give this book to one of my friends (who ia a gamer) but I don't know if I should read it first (I'm not a gamer). I want to because I hate giving books to other ppl without reading it myself, but I just finished FW and I'm kinda in a reading slump and I don't want to aggravate it

James I think it's great and was recommended it by a non-gamer friend. It's about work, collaboration, and relationships over time. It's centered on games, but you don't need to play them to relate to the metaphors.

I wouldn't hesitate...the story takes you onto the back lot of the gaming industry and where and how games originate. And as James has indicated it is about relationships. It is well written by a master storyteller and craftsman...look for the connections throughout the story beginning with the opening quote from Emily Dickinson.

Laura (experiment in progress) As a sort of, part time, tech geek gamer I would highly recommend it to your friend. It's not just about gaming, it's more about the work around building a game an social relationships. Though it does have a lot of little nods built in to various games they're not necessary to understand.

I hope your friend enjoys it as much as I did!

Kelly Mallegni I loved it although I can't put my finger on exactly why. The characters have stayed with me.

Colleen I DNF'd it 1/3 of the way through, and I wish so badly that I hadn't listened to the hype on this one. I'm still trying to scrub the toxicity of this book from my brain.

Madeline A I really disliked this book, and not just because it was about a topic that didnt interest me (Video game coding) but also because it seemed to drag on forever, with more toxic characters.

Gilbert Martinez Terrible book. Starts off okay, and then it turns into a constant back and forth arguement. Crappy ending.

It does shed some light as to how working in the video game field is like, but other than that its not a great book and I firmly stand on this.

Armando Good book, not great. Forced myself to complete it. I was swept away by the hype.

Midori I really loved this book, it was super impactful to me. I am also a gamer, so I enjoyed reading about their development and success and felt everything was realistic for the time period and accessible equipment.

It did make me cry a few times though, I would recommend you read it, even if you don't have an interest in video games, the plot is predominantly about a platonic male/female friendship that spans decades.

Michael I did enjoy this book, even though I don't write games at all. There is some human-based things that are not game-centered that I really found interesting. In the hospital, especially.

Aubs Definitely not worth the hype imo, but if they are someone who enjoys reading books with unlikable characters then they may really enjoy it. I personally hated it because I need to like at least one character to enjoy reading a book, but I don't think that prescription applies to everyone. Just a fair warning: the characters suck lol.
Other than that, I think it was a great insight into the early gaming development world, as well as the business side of things (the drama!).

Michael Oh, the two main characters are not "likeable" for sure. I liked Marx better....

Cass I think it's one of those books that you either love or hate. I haven't quiet been able to figure out why but personally I loved it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Naomi I was expecting more of a "Ready Player One" type book but instead got a trauma bonding, friendship triangle book with the subplot of video games to push the story along.

That being said, I am still glad I read it. Some parts were not enjoyable to read at all but it was still a great story.

Jan Z It is boring. I think you absolutely have to care about gaming because it is a rare page that does not discuss it. As others have said, the main characters are unlikable and toxic. But they are not interesting like a good villain.

Scott Marcus I really enjoyed it. I'm not a gamer. I typically read mysteries and thrillers, but saw this at the top of a bunch of lists, so gave it a try.
