Tawnya | 4653 comments I'm sorry if I am a dolt for not knowing this, but in the list for valid items it says something called "repacks". What is that referring to?
Then over in the non-valid there is "Prepak, ppk, stockpack, stock pack". What are those?

Mesembryanthemum | 200 comments Adding to your question because, in addition to "repacks" and "Prepak, ppk...", there are other mysterious items in these lists. They seem to use jargon that most people don't know. I certainly don't, and I worked at a bookstore for years.

In the valid items article:
- F&C Sheets
- Repacks

In the "invalid items" article:
- 18fl, 24fl, 27fl, 36fl (fl = floor display)
- Awbc
- Clip strip
- Dumpbin, dump bin, dumpb, dumpbi, dumpbn, dbin, d/bin
- >header
- Mixed bin, mixed copy, copy bin, mxd
- Mxfl
- Prepak, ppk, stockpack, stock pack
- Shrinkwrap, shrink wrap, s/wrap, swrap
- x12, x24, x36, x48, 12c, 24c, 36c, 48c, 12cc, 24cc, 36cc, 48cc, 60cc

Also:
- Shorts (my guess is that this means "Short stories", but why use an abbreviation when the two-word term would be clearer?)

Thanks for bumping this via support email Tawnya. I'm adding this to our backlog of items to clean up in the Librarian Manual.

Scott I'm guessing they are bundles that a seller might put together. The bins are the displays you see at stores that feature a book or books. Sometimes distributors feed them to Amazon and they get vomited up here.

Tawnya | 4653 comments Back in 2023 when I asked this, I was clueless about pretty much everything. I didn't think to Google anything. I went to check on something recently, and remembered that I never received an answer for this specific post. I sent support this message:

From the valid page
1. What are F&C Sheets?
2. Are "repacks" items from sites such as the Folio Society?

From the invalid page:
1. What does "Awbc" mean? The net said it was something called "American Wholesale Book" and is owned by Books-a-Million. Wiki says it is a distributor. Why would that ever have any bearing on a book. It shouldn't matter WHERE someone purchased their book. How would we even be able to prove that?

2. "Clip strip" Why on earth would that need to be stated. Unless the term means something besides the hanging clips for chips, etc in stores, this deserves a very large - DUH!

3. "Mxfl" Google couldn't even find this. The nearest thing it came up with was a bunch of Florida stuff.

4. " x12, x24, x36, x48, 12c, 24c, 36c, 48c, 12cc, 24cc, 36cc, 48cc, 60cc" Google had no idea what to do with this query.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Until last year, I had never heard of the Folio Society. The books are very cool. The lists really should have definitions, since odds are there are many librarians who've never encountered these terms before. Every industry has language specific to it.
Tawnya | 4653 comments The repacks are in the valid area.
I have a definition of F&C Sheets (Folded and Collated Sheets) to add here: A specific, legitimate book format used in publishing. These are unbound, printed pages that have been folded and arranged in order, sometimes sold or distributed before formal binding, often featuring older titles or specific editions.
A repack is an edition that's been published with a new cover - I don't think that needs inclusion in the 'valid' article.
