Ellen | 3574 comments The library exists solely to protect books from remote times and places but not everyone can enter its doors or even see its existence. Irene is a librarian assigned to carry out its missions; basically, Irene is a spy. She is in pursuit of a rare copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales but in order to locate it she must go to London - the London of an alternate universe. Irene is accompanied by an apprentice, Kai, who has a few secrets of his own. Their adventure turns out to be a dangerous one in a world filled with vampires, dragons, fae, incredible mechanical insects and other humans obsessed with getting the book for themselves. Irene and Kai are both aided and thwarted by those they meet along the way but Irene's mission cannot be stopped.

The characters were likeable and the fantastic creatures were imaginative and fun. I do wish I liked the fantasy genre more because I may not have done this story justice with a 3-star rating.
