Quick question in this category. Can there be a slight variation in the author name? For example: Kate/Katie or Louise/Louisa, John/Johnnie etc. Just trying to plan ahead.

Returning for another year! This one can be a little tricky, so read the instructions carefully.
Start with a book of your choice and then find your next book using a “link” to either the book title or the author's name.
A few simple rules:
1. You can add to the beginning or the end of the chain but not the middle.
2. You cannot re-order the chain after you've added a book to it.
3. The linking word or author may be used more than once in the chain but not consecutively, so no chaining of the same author’s name or series title. For example, you CANNOT link
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
OR The Lake House by Kate Morton with The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton
4. We will accept a pluralized word as a linking word, i.e., Baby, followed by Babies. We will also accept variations of the same verb, i.e., Runs and Ran or Running. Name variations are also acceptable. John/Jonathon, Kathleen/Kate/Cathy, etc.
5. Common words cannot be used as a link in the chain. (i.e., "the", "and", "with", etc.)
Here’s an example from my 2021 book chain.
Ghost by Jason Reynolds
The Ghost Brigades by John Scalzi (ghost)
The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley (brigade)
A Light to My Path by Lynn Austin (light)
The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (Lynn)
