Yep, Ivan was all "this is my 'domain'" for a very long time, and he kind of accepted what his life had become up until Ruby came into the picture. The weight of his responsibility to Ruby changes him, and he's finally able to recognize his 'domain' and the mall as a prison and that Ruby should not be in it. Bravo, Ivan!
I also liked that getting out still wasn't really on his radar even when he was making the billboard. it was all about ruby, he was totally selfless.
Yeah, I think Ruby really brought out the "silverback" in him. After Stella died, he really stepped up and became protective over her. Seeing her go from freedom to the mall helped him see the stark contrast between the two environments.
