NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11201 comments The Ghost Bride is a fantasy set in Malaysia in 1893. The writing is evocative, and describes an elaborate ghost world with a culture (and economy) of its own. The author includes end notes about the afterlife beliefs of Chinese people in the Islands off the mainland. I think they would be useful before or during the book.

The culture stressed the importance of honoring the ancestors by providing them with gifts to support them in the afterlife. Li Lan’s family has lost most of their wealth, which limits her marriage prospects. The Lin family recently lost a son, and they would like Li Lan to be his ghost bride to honor his memory. She refuses, but he manages to invade her dreams, leading her to learn more about what happens in the afterlife.I don’t read a lot of stories involving ghosts, but I really enjoyed Li Lan’s explorations. The story was fascinating with many surprises along the way.
