Anonymous Review #1 The author describes in clear detail the horrible living conditions in poor areas of New York City in the mid-1800s. The plight of women and children in that era was particularly endangered by the lack of birth control and knowledge of the female body. Women of all social classes were affected. The book is written in the first person and has a dramatic opening. On finishing the story, the reader will most likely go back to re-read the beginning. An enjoyable book which made me glad to be living now instead of back then.
