I started this during November for the Dragons tag, but the writing was so dry it took me a while to finish. Only the reminder that it's due back at the library lit a fire to get me through the last of it. VERY interesting topic, but the writing just dragged through too much minutia for me.
My Review: This biography of J.R.R. Tolkien gives an insight into the myriad of influences that lead to the modern classics The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Fascinated by mythology, folklore and gothic/medieval languages since childhood, Tolkien went on to study philology at Oxford University. Essentially the study of language itself. And eventually headed up that same area of study himself at Oxford University.
The Hobbit started as a loose set of stories he wrote for his own children. The Lord of the Rings took Tolkien many years to complete, and reflected his desire to create an English mythology.
