In December we will be reading Silas Marner by George Eliot for our State of the Nation category - who's in?

message 2: by Mela (new) - added it

Mela (melabooks) | 94 comments I am in. Yet I am afraid I won't be able to read it until the next month.

Phil (lanark) | 643 comments All my titles I had on a waiting list on Borrowbox seem to be coming in, so I will read this after them. Might still be in by the end of the month.

Looking forward to this - it's a classic I've never even watched an adaptation of,

I did finish this back in December
I liked the writing and the fact that it was pretty short for 19th century
but thought the plot got increasingly odd/unwieldy
so it topped out at 3 stars for me.

I think that this is my favorite of all the George Eliot books I have read. However, I don't really like her writing style much so that isn't much of a recommendation! Too many long-winded pontificating passages... the actual plot I liked.

It's always something of a surprise to me how varied the British 19th century authors were. I guess that I expect them all to be similar to Dickens or Trollope!

think I'm done with Eliot tbh
I DNF'd Middlemarch (extremely well-written, but I didn't care about any of the characters)
Mill On The Floss was pretty good until the ending (don't get me started on the ending!)
so it'll be a fair few years before I'm tempted to go for another of hers

Leslie | 904 comments Yeah, Middlemarch took me a couple of tries before I finally finished it...

Yes! I remember the anger in my review for the ending of Mill on the Floss, I literally threw the book across the room, I was so mad.
