Here is where we’ll discuss Lost Daughters by Mary Monroe.

Synopsis : Mama Ruby has died and Maureen Montgomery is finally taking charge of her own life. With her beautiful teenage daughter, Loretta, by her side, she returns to Florida and settles into a routine any other woman would consider bland. But for Maureen and her brother Virgil, after Mama Ruby's hair-trigger temper and murderous ways, bland is good. Yet Loretta has other ideas. . .
Set on becoming rich and famous, Loretta convinces Maureen to let her start a modeling career with the help of a Miami photographer. But even as they move in promising new directions, they can't escape Mama Ruby--including Virgil, who's concealed one of her most shocking acts for most of his life. To make a future that's truly hers, Maureen will have to take on a bit of Mama Ruby's strength, forge new bonds--and face down the past.

It’s on kindle unlimited. I just downloaded and I’m going to start it tonight. Of course, the libraries have the audiobook but it won’t be available for about two weeks 🤦🏾‍♀️

Honestly, I liked Maureen’s character for the most part so I’m hoping I’ll like this book more than the second. In the synopsis the other daughter isn’t mentioned but I hope her character is in the book.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments Well, I am holding judgment for a little while longer.

Shaylah | 424 comments Mod
lol we shall see how this book goes

Shaylah | 424 comments Mod
OMG y’all Maureen’s daughter Loretta is a hot mess lol 😂.
I don’t know why people spoil their children to this degree

Also, Maureen is 32yrs old and Virgil still hasn’t told her about mama Ruby. I think he should’ve told her by now. I don’t understand him having a hard time telling her because Ruby is long gone and can’t chastise him lol

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments I was wondering about why Virgil hadn’t told her too! I vaguely remember him promising never to tell.

I thought Maureen was bad, but Loretta takes the cake! Maureen looks like an angel by comparison.

Shaylah | 424 comments Mod
I'm so glad this book is on kindle unlimited because I'm going to have to take breaks from it. Loretta is irritating and so is Maureen.

Angel | 490 comments I am two chapters away from finishing Mama Ruby and I will start reading Lost Daughters. I have to say, Mama Ruby’s outlandish behavior in The Upper Room (book 1), has been justified/redeemed in Book 2. It gives a bit of insight into what made her the way she was in The Upper Room. I’m curious if Book 3 will have Maureen and Virgil meeting their lost sister that was given up by Mama Ruby. I hope so.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments I need to have a short non disclosure conversation with someone about skanky Loretta.

Shaylah | 424 comments Mod
Lolololol!! Say what you have to say Dosha!!

I’m at the part where Maureen and Loretta are done meeting with the photographer, I can’t remember his name but he was sleazy. I had to take a break after that because I knew Loretta was about to do something ridiculous 🤦🏾‍♀️.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments His name is Mel. Keep reading, daughter 😂😂😂.
Somehow Maureen does not deserve Loretta. I know it is bad to spoil our children, but I think we all do it to some degree. We cannot help it. It seems to become an extension of our love for our child. That love transforms itself into over indulgence. Loretta is spoiled rotten. She is what my big mama would call ruined. “Y’all done ruined that chile”.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments I am on chapter 42. Where are other folx at in this crazy book?

Shaylah | 424 comments Mod
Sorry, my family is visiting from Chicago so I haven’t had much time to read. I’m only in chapter 11 so far. The audio book finally came through so that has made it a lot easier to get through. I’m hoping to finish before the end of the month.

Ugh I can’t believe what Loretta and Mel are doing behind Maureen’s back. They both are scandalous.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments I am beginning to wonder about Mary Monroe. She is crazy. How in the world does she think up stuff like this? I feel like she is making, or has already made, a very bad name for young black southern women. People might read this stuff and believe that is how grits (girls raised in the south) behave.

Shaylah | 424 comments Mod
I’m so sorry Dosha for not participating as much but this book is so hard for me to get through. It takes forever to get through a chapter and I’ve realized that it’s so vulgar that I cannot listen to the audiobook because my toddler is always around lol.

It’s just so hard to listen to this fourteen year old girl being with her mother’s man. Even the way she went about getting with Mel was disgusting and now she’s pushing her mother to marry him so they can all live in the house together is just sick. This series has gone so far down from the upper room that I’m thinking I don’t really like this author anymore. I’m going to finish this book but it’s going to take some time 😩

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments I ain’t mad attcha. Any mother worth her salt would not let her child hear anything about this hot mess. I had to put it down and read about two or three other books before I could pick it back up. There are no children around me, I just was so sickened by what I was listening to I had to take a few breaks.

Mary Monroe is not going to get too much more of my attention. I thought Ruby Jean was bad, hmph! Loretta needs a serious spanking. It was clear to me in the first book of this trilogy that Maureen was not too bright, and this last book (thank God it is the last book) really shows how stupid Maureen is. If there were any more books in this series, it is doubtful that I would be able to finish the series. I was much happier with the ending than I thought I would be. Maureen is a good hearted person and that is a good thing for Loretta. If Loretta was my daughter, her circumstances would have been a lot different.

Angel | 490 comments I’ve just gotten to where Loretta and Maureen met Mel the photographer. Loretta surely is spoiled rotten. Or as Dosha says, “ruined!” Mary Monroe certainly has her characters sexually charged at very early ages!

Angel | 490 comments Ok, I just read the first page of chapter 6 and Maureen is pretty much showcasing her daughter and Mel’s description of what he wants to do with a 14 year old child is a bit disturbing. Even if she is “grown”.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments I.found this third book to be disgusting even though Ruby Jean and Othella were sexually active at 14 or earlier. Somehow this time it is just plain sick. I was glad to get to the end. I had to find out if they got busted or not.

Angel | 490 comments I’m up to chapter 13 on this book. Mel makes me sick. I want to know one thing, does this book ever introduce the lost daughter, that Mama Ruby gave up? I am hoping we get past all this Mel/Maureen/Loretta business.

Shaylah | 424 comments Mod
I thought I was going to be able to finish before the new year but I just couldn’t do it.

It’s just so disgusting to have a 14 year old and a 35+? Year old sexually involved. I understand these things happen in real life but the most disturbing part of it all is that she pushed her mom to be with him and then pushed her to marry him so they all could have sex under one roof. I don’t understand why Loretta hates her mom so much. She must hate her, right? Why else would she do this??

I’m going to finish because I have to know how they get caught. When will I finish? I have no idea

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments You bring up a good point. Why does she hate her mom so much?

Angel | 490 comments You guys, after finishing Heaven and Earth Grocery, I am back to trying to slog through this Lost Daughters mess. I am to the point where Maureen has been married to Mel for a year now and folks are hinting to her that Loretta and Mel are a bit close. Also, Catty is telling her to get a job in a nursing home, “for the benefits”. Maureen has called to inquire and the lady is trying to hire her over the phone! This seems about right! But hello, she’s talking about the Christmas gift exchange and her comments about “Muslims and their bernoose or whatever they wear” this author has no filter! I am going to finish this book on principle but I am sorely disappointed in how this third book is coming along.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments @Angel, I am seriously considering taking Mary Mk roe off my list of authors to look out for. The women has no filter is putting it mildly. I finished it so could talk trash about it with complete knowledge and intelligence, lol.

Angel | 490 comments I just got to the part where she had her first day at the nursing home and as she’s leaving, she sees Mrs. Freeman’s son and now her second day on the job she’s having erotic thoughts about a man she saw from a distance, who smiled at her? Is Mary Monroe serious? Maureen, Loretta and Mel are probably three of the least likable characters, smh! I mean Maureen, what are you? 12? You are a grown woman! Swooning while your husband is banging your daughter right under your nose?? I am wondering if the other Maureen (the baby that Mama Ruby gave up) makes an appearance in this book. I am so over this tired storyline, I want Mary Monroe to bring back the spirit of the first two books, I hope Virgil tells Maureen about her birth just to get off this current story line.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments @ Angel - All I can say is keep reading daughter, 😂😂😂
There are quite a few surprising twists and turns coming.

Angel | 490 comments I’m up to Chapter 39 and the story has indeed taken a turn! Jay was kidnapped, Virgil has just confessed to Maureen that she also was kidnapped. She took it much better than I thought she would. I’m still wondering about the first daughter- Mama Ruby’s baby that she gave up. I really hope we get to meet her.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments Yes Maureen took learning of her kidnapping very well, considering how badly it tore Virgil up. I was surprised at how much of a toll it took on him. I guess the guilt of holding his tongue all these years was just more than he could bear. Personally, I thought he should have told her soon after Mama Ruby died.

Angel | 490 comments I just started chapter 42 and Virgil and Maureen went back to Louisiana to meet relatives. It sounds like they are going to meet “Old Maureen”!

Shaylah | 424 comments Mod
I’ve made a lot of progress, I’m now on page 386. Oh man Loretta is a piece of work. This girl must hate Maureen and I can’t believe it’s about her 9th birthday, it has to be more to it than that. At this point in the story I feel so bad for Maureen.

From the books we’ve read, do you rate Loretta as one of the worst characters you’ve encountered? Do you think she is THE worst? For me off the top of my head I would definitely put her in the top three lol she’s horrible 😡

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments She is definitely not a good person. She is horrible. If this is only about her 9th birthday, she is unbalanced for sure. I cannot compare Loretta to anyone as mean spirited as Loretta is. Remember, she was a twin. She must have been the evil twin. Do you think she drowned her sister?

Shaylah | 424 comments Mod
I agree Loretta is unbalanced for sure!! I’m hoping more comes to light about why she dislikes her mom so much because it’s just not making any sense to me.

You know what Dosha, I wouldn’t put it past her to do something like that to her sister. Clearly if you make her mass enough she’s going to make you pay for it. I think in the other book they mentioned how much of a trip she was. I don’t remember the details of the twin’s death but I think no one really knew how she drowned.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments If I remember correctly, the two twins were swimming and one drowned. That was all the details I remember. She could’ve done it, but I don’t have any basis for thinking that way. I just know she is a hoochie mama with no respect for anyone, including herself.

Angel | 490 comments I’m up to chapter 46 (page 255). Maureen and Virgil just got back from Louisiana and have met “Big Maureen”. She sounds like she has a lot of Mama Ruby’s traits. Loretta and Mel never even bothered to listen to the answering machine, and were sexing it up all weekend. Loretta is just trashy and Mel is a pig. With a capital P. How can Maureen not suspect
Anything ?? How can she be that dense?

Angel | 490 comments One thing I have been mentally trying to do, is figure out the family tree! Virgil’s mama and Othella’s brother are big Maureen’s parents, so that makes Ike his uncle and Little Maureen his cousin? And Othella is the mama of Little Maureen so Ike is her Uncle as well so Big Maureen is her cousin also, and Virgil is her cousin? And Mama Ruby is her aunt? Or no… not by blood. It scrambles my brain!

Angel | 490 comments @Shayla, I agree, I think Loretta is capable of anything. She may have drowned her own twin sister. Or maybe not directly drowned her but maybe didn’t help her if she was struggling. She’s a bad seed.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments As Seed! Yep 👍🏾

Angel | 490 comments Oh that Loretta is awful! She’s a little whore. Selfish brat. Ugh! Mel at least apologized to Maureen, but Loretta is just hateful.

Shaylah | 424 comments Mod
@Angel lololol she is the reason it took me two months to finish reading it. I think I stopped reading for like three weeks lol it was too much for me. I can’t wait to see what you think of the ending

Angel | 490 comments I just finished the chapter where they called her from NY. She is just hateful to her own mother. Who does that??

Angel | 490 comments Now Jay is coming back into the picture.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments I remember saying that Maureen wasn’t too bright in the first book. She was a teenager that barely managed to graduate from high school. I don’t know if this was a trait from Othella or not, but she never did show signs of brilliance. By book three, her stupidity was through the roof! Remember her mother was an unfit mother, to say the least. It may have been a teeny weenie mustard seed sized blessing that Maureen was stolen and raised outside of that family, but she never did get smart. Has anyone noticed that Mama Ruby, Othella and Loretta were all whores. Loretta was the only whore that didn’t have sense enough to get paid. If Maureen had stayed with her biological family do you think she would have been a whore too?

Angel | 490 comments Maureen seems to have this inner moral compass. I will give her that. And Loretta actually is getting paid the most of all those gals. She is traveling and posing and dressing pretty and all just for sucking Mel’s ….! She has NO moral compass. She is so mean and selfish.

Angel | 490 comments I just realized, I haven’t finished the book yet. Maybe Loretta is gonna get what’s coming to her?! Is Mel gonna drop her? I hope Mel gets his also!

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments Loretta gets paid as a model. But she doesn’t get paid for being a huge whore. She is more of a whore than her bio mom, grandmother and her kidnapper mother. She is a bad seed. I don’t even think they can make a movie out of this one. It took me a long time to finish it because it was so sickening.

Angel | 490 comments I finally finished it! That adoption was so sketchy! But I am glad Loretta and Mel both got what they deserved!

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments After reading Lost Daughters, I found myself lost. When Maureen met Maureen I started thinking of all the other blood relatives they had. I got lost. Virgil found a big sister he never knew he had and Young Maureen still has not found her siblings. Big Maureen’s father is young Maureen’s uncle, So young Maureen and old Maureen are first cousins? My head is swimming.

Angel | 490 comments Young Maureen lost all of her siblings, remember? Othella’s kids all died in a fire I think? Unless they all didn’t die.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments Now that you mention it, I remember the fire now but I wasn’t sure if all of the kids died. So Young Maureen is Old Maureen’s auntie
