Bookshops & Bonedust (Legends & Lattes, #0) by Travis Baldree

When an injury throws a young, battle-hungry orc off her chosen path, she may find that what we need isn't always what we seek.

In Bookshops & Bonedust, a prequel to Legends & Lattes, New York Times bestselling author Travis Baldree takes us on a journey of high fantasy, first loves, and second-hand books.

Viv's career with the notorious mercenary company Rackam's Ravens isn't going as planned.

Wounded during the hunt for a powerful necromancer, she's packed off against her will to recuperate in the sleepy beach town of Murk—so far from the action that she worries she'll never be able to return to it.

What's a thwarted soldier of fortune to do?

Spending her hours at a beleaguered bookshop in the company of its foul-mouthed proprietor is the last thing Viv would have predicted, but it may be both exactly what she needs and the seed of changes she couldn't possibly imagine.

Still, adventure isn't all that far away. A suspicious traveler in gray, a gnome with a chip on her shoulder, a summer fling, and an improbable number of skeletons prove Murk to be more eventful than Viv could have ever expected.

Melindam | 4435 comments I am at 42% of the book and really enjoy it.

I have read and enjoyed Legends & Lattes, though not blown away by it, and I find the prequel is flowing in a similar cosy, low-angst way, which is fine. (actually, this has a bit more action.. kind of..) :)

Taylor H (taylorofcontents) | 3 comments I actually read these out of order! I first read Bookshops & Bonedust, and am currently reading Legends & Lattes! Before starting the book, I was reading the reviews and so many people said that “it doesn’t live up to the first book”, etc. However, after being about 20 pages from finishing the first book, I wonder why everyone thought that it was SO much better? I think that they’re both great books and very similarly matched!

Really looking forward to any of Travis Baldree’s new work!

Melindam | 4435 comments I have also read Legends & Lattes first as the was the 1st book that got published. :)

I enjoyed it, but as I was not aware that it was supposed to be "cosy-fantasy", I kept waiting for something more to happen, so I was a bit disappointed.

Now with the genre-awareness in mind, I had a different attitude to Bookshops & Bonedust, so I enjoyed it more.

But it means that Legends and Lattes will get a reread from me. :)
