I read a trilogy of short chapter books in the mid 2000s. They took place in a pseudo historical Irish land where people lived in small villages. The main character was the daughter of the village leader called the “ri.” Horses were integral and the main character had a horse named Dannsair. In one book the MC and her older sister or cousin were captives of another village. In the third book the MC lived in a large city with a kind older woman and disguised herself as a boy.
